Is there a Toy Store Local to you?
on: March 23, 2018, 10:46:36 PM
I always wonder how many of us are fortunate enough to have a Local Store where we can Research,Fondle,Drool and Consumate a deal for our favorite MT,Knife and other EDC Gear?

There are always stores that carry a limited selection in various departments and dedicated outdoor stores that might have more extensive options but I am lucky enough to have a pretty major Retail & Internet Operation in my Metro Area and I am always both Anxious & Terrified to go thereat the same time!

Sure it is amazing to be able to see, hold and have anything I can imagine pretty much but also this can be fraught with danger too.
I suppose we each have our cross to bare though?

I also admit to deciding what I "Need" at the store and then hunting it down online to see if I can find a smoking hot deal but I end up buying Local too depending on how bad the "Need" is at the time.

So do you have a local source or are you forced to troll the Internet and take long trips dedicated to pretending you are not there to buy?

Three outdoor supply stores and a cutlery store. All four of them carry Victorinox. Opinel, Buck and Leatherman available too.

Only one near me but they don't like opening the cabinet to let you fondle them though.

Not really any good stores here, but there are a few that have a small selection of MT's, knives and some SAK's to go look at

We don’t even have a Walmart locally so as far as a dedicated knife/MT store...... nope.

One knife store, two mine/industrial supply places (who carry a few S&K, Klein and Proto tools and some of the knives, but most has to be special ordered), a Walmart, Rural King, as well as several independent hardware and "seed and feed" stores and a couple gun stores (one of which has the cheapest prices on Leatherman I've seen anywhere, but I just like to look at the old guns they have, some dating back to WWI). There's also a Cabela's and Bass Pro two hours away, which I usually visit a couple times a year on summer break. Taylor Brands is nearby those two stores, in the next city over, sometimes I want to go there and try something like what happened with the Tough Tool and one of our members at SHOT, then show that you can't break an original Tough Tool no matter what, as well as the cheap steel compared to the 1095 and 440C used by the original company.  Oh, and we mustn't forget the various flea markets and antique malls--quite a few pieces in my collection (including most of my dedicated tools) have come from there

There are a few stores in the city. Some owned by Victorinox country partners.

1 Country partner has a chain of Ace Hardware stores. But they only carry a few selection of SAKs in blister packs and some cutlery.

The other country partner has 2 stores with a large selection on display. And we get a chance to play around with them. They also sell SAK spare parts like T&T, scissor/plier springs. But no replacement scales. From time to time, I would go to these stores just to test if I can resist the temptation to buy. Which often fails.

Just a couple of Sporting Goods stores here. One has a decent selection of various makers, but their offerings are nowhere near comprehensive for any one maker. That may be a good thing.....

Within 15 miles there are 7 walmarts, 3 Lowes, 2 Home Depots, Academy Sports, Dick's Sporting Goods, True Value, and several smaller hardware stores.
My isssue is that I collect mostly discontinued MTs. :ahhh
I work at a fleamarket/antiqies store though. So I see some nice MTs every now and then for cheap.  :)

From just one quote you're concluding to such a suggestion? Do you have Irish roots?

Cabela's and REI pretty close, and SMKW about 4 hours away. So yeah, mostly online.

Lots of places to see and buy stuff, but everything seems to be in blister packs.  You can look but not touch or play.

Chako, your house is a Black Hole that has sucked up all MTs in the vicinity! It IS the local Toy Store.  :pok:

funny that I should see this topic here today, I just realised yesterday there is a store near me that I haven't checked out!
we have a big box store that carries outdoors stuff and they have a medium selection of SAKs and MTs but now I know of an industrial supply store that potentially carries a lot more stock.
i'm not confident that I will buy any from them though.. I seem to find better prices and availability online. the only thing I find cheaper locally is sheaths for some reason.

Possibly, and most of it was bought online and shipped here. As far as stores selling...not much to talk about.  :D

At least a 20min drive to reach a Vic/LM dealer.
And they don't stock anything but standard tools.

I'm about 10 to 15 minutes away from 4 Leatherman/Vic Dealers, and about 25 to 30 minutes away from 5 more.  But like Nick said, they don't stock anything but the normal stuff, meaning Wingmans,Revs, Rebars, Waves, ST300 and Surges for Leatherman, and Campers, Climbers, Huntsmen, Classics, Outriders, Swisschamps and Rangerwoods for Victorinox (oh, and the Wine Master  ::).)

In one of the stores nearby they have a Wenger Ranger, an old SOG and a Charge Ti in the display, but they're all quite expensive :(

In another store nearby they used to have some old Wengers, and some Swisstools and Spirits, and in another store nearby they had an old PST new in box, but one freak bought all of them ...
