Need a better cleaning method.
on: March 27, 2018, 06:09:54 PM
I was recently breaking up a busted Wenger/Buck Globetrotter for parts (someone had destroyed the Phillips and its surrounding liners by putting to much force on the tool) and noticed there was still a ton of gunk in between the parts that I couldn't reach (area between spacers, backsprings, and liners, as well as under the scales). I had cleaned it well I thought, using cotton swabs, an old toothbrush, dish detergent, hot water, and even Hibiclens, a surgical grade disinfectant wash.

Are there cheaper (non-destructive) methods to get deeper, or should I invest in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Might try a can of compressed air; like those sold for cleaning computer keyboards. Just a thought.

You could try a set of plastic "dental picks."  I use them to get into nooks and crannies on some of my guns.

I've also had good luck getting gunk out of SAKs with pipe cleaners.

what I do is soak a couple at a time in a tray full of iso alcohol for about 30mins (which removes dirt and dissolves old oils and gunk) then blow them out with my air compressor, followed by thoroughly spray them down with WD40. then wipe them down with a cloth and Q-tips.
usually good for a couple months of use after that.

Ultrasonic cleaner with soapy water works great if you have one. Run again with plain water a couple times. Rinse with isopropanol, dry completely, then lubricate.

Just don't do this with cellidor!  The alcohol will damage the scales!!
