Another Charge Plus Fail
on: March 28, 2018, 12:13:50 PM
This is my second attempt to get a Charge Plus with no After you open and close the pliers the blade interlock that prevents the blade from opening while the pliers are used won’t release. The file and saw also have vertical blade play but not as much as the other one. It’s going back too. Leatherman really needs to up their game.

I can’t post the video here but it’s on Instagram under Gadgetman7. I couldn’t find my previous thread so I’m starting a new one.

Is anyone else having issues.

There is something going on with the spring steel interlock retention mechanism. Perhaps you could douse it with penetrating fluid? My old Wave did that when I bought it used. Maybe that will help. I know it shouldn't have arrived that way, but a Little penetrating fluid is cheaper than another round of postage cost.
If that doesn't work, you should give LM an email explaining the issue in detail and request the replacement tool to be thoroughly checkes before they send it out.

Are you saying you can't open the blades ?

That's what I thought when I read the OP.

I've had this happen on my BO Wave (the previous version, not the Wave +), and only on the PE blade.  I took the file from my Surge (loose, not in the saw/file holder) and gently took off some material from the "blade safety pin" (or whatever these things are called).  Now it works just fine, but things like that shouldn't happen Leatherman.

They always claim that each implement on every tool is checked by hand, but I find that hard to believe.  Too much of these "problems" keep slipping through.  I think it was in an episode of "how it's made" on the Discovery Channel that they showed the Victorinox factory, and here you saw a couple of people, all wearing white gloves, using a small knife to open each layer of each SAK, can't say that I've ever seen something like that in a Leatherman Video ...

C'mon Leatherman, please do something about this  :pok:.

This seems to keeps happening with LM tools
I think qaulity control needs to be improved
And we shouldn't have to file and fix a problem
That should of been checked by
LM before they send them out

That’s correct. The blade won’t open at all.

Yep, and in my case with my BO Wave, I could open the blade (with great effort), and once it was open I could use the file on the safety, but when you can't open the blade at all, using the file is out of the question  ::).

Send it back is the only option I guess ...

LM has massive quality problems and the price policy in Europe is ridiculous. I have tools from different brands but I am disappointed with LM. I wouldn’t buy any new LM - the older tools are really good...

So...three’s a charm. Just got the replacement and it’s good. Good lookup and no blade play. Leatherman is capable of good quality but right now it seems to be hit or miss.

Today I found a Wave + at Lowes. The saw, file and serrated blade all had significant play. Up and down and side to side. I tightened the screws a little but the play was still there. I returned it to Lowes and got a new tool. The second one is better but the file still has a lot of play. Also I noticed that Leatherman has made the liner lock for the outer tools much thinner. Kinda disappointing. And this coming from a Leatherman fanboy.
