Favorite Original/Cover songs?

This is a spin off of the super secret GAW thread.

I kind of like the conversation of original versions of songs people like over covers or vice versa.

I'm gonna start off with the Chieftains covering 'Behind Blue Eyes' by the Who. Made much better since they have Roger Daltrey as guest vocalist.

The fusion of hard rock and celtic folk is amazing in this piece. I don't think it's 'better', just very interesting and different, and at least to me, still works well.

Every now and then, people fuse two things I hate, to make a thing I kind of love.

I hate Britney Spears and deathgrowl in metal music, but...

I went to see 'TrollfesT' with a bunch of other bands, and they were so rediculously energetic, hilarious, silly, and fun, that I kind of loved them

It's gotta be Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower for me. It's like a whole new song. Just gets better with every listen.

I posted the original of this in a thread dedicated to my friend Mike Harrison, however this was the first version of the song I heard. Which also tied Judas Priest up in legal knots for ages.

Yeah, the idea of posting original and cover seems like a solid one.

Also, on Johnny Cash's 'Hurt', yep. I mentioned that in the post in the previous thread. This is one of the cover versions of a song that (I think) is a VAST improvement.

Another one I mentioned, 'Mad World'.

Another song i mentioned was 'Whiter Shade of Pale'

And this is one of the rare songs where I really DON'T have a favorite. These are the three versions I'm most familiar with...

The original is fantastic, and both covers bring something a little new.

Ooh, I didn't know Tears for Fears did Mad World originally. Not that I really know the cover.
I also like Johnny Cash's 'Hurt' much more than the original - great to listen (and sing) to when you have a hangover!

Of course, even though we may prefer the sound of a cover to that of the original, we must give credit to the songwriters for the structure, chord changes and melodies which were put there in first place.

Man so many great covers it is tough to pick just one?

I think my favorite might be the Fenton Robinson song

Back when I was DJ'ing it was thought that Louie,Louie was the most covered song of all time maybe and I had collected a bunch of covers of that one but my favorite was the Clarke-Duke Project version but that was a while ago too!

Someone mentioned the Jimmy Hendricks version of 'All Along the Watchtower', which I agree is an absolutely FANTASTIC version, certainly the best IMO, but there was a very cool cover used in the 'Battlestar Galactica' TV series reboot. It was placed perfectly, used perfectly, and just seriously sent shivers up my spine. It has a very cool long intro with a sort of middle eastern sound.

Likewise, the first episode of Westworld has a fantastic instrumental cover of 'Paint It Black' done in a sort of Ennio Morricone symphonic 60's western style. The series Westworld scatters anachronistic music through the series, as it's supposed to actually be the future recreating the old west.

For the record, let me be completely clear. I don't like Britney Spears. I REALLY don't like her. However, I have to be honest, I prefer her version of 'Oops, I Did It Again' to the throat cancer sound of Children of Bodom. I REALLY don't like death growl, screamo stuff.

For the record, the Warmen cover of 'Somebody's Watching Me' was a hit during Friday Night hangout and beers.

I like the Bad Wolves 'Zombie' cover. I heard it I think on the day it was released. Very nice.

I don't know if you know about 'The House of the Rising Sun', but that song is VERY old. The oldest known recording of it is from 1933, and the song predates that.

It's a bit like the song 'Man of Constant Sorrow', having morphed a good bit over time.

Here's an 'old timey' version of 'Man of Constant Sorrow'...

Then the sort of 'modernized' version, by the Stanley Brothers...

And the fairly similar (but even more updated) version done in 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou'
