Leatherman OHT Leather Sheath
on: March 29, 2018, 08:37:35 AM
G'Day,

The Leatherman OHT: Wonderful tool, but the sheath, to me, is not for EDC use at all. I got the XL Molle sheath and it is just not comfortable on my hip driving trains. The are some OEM options like the older style Surge sheath. The OHT fits quite well in there, but the side locking mechanism wears the elastic sides out, a common problem with these sheaths. The leather on them are pretty good, but the rest of it tears and the sheath become pretty useless. I would imagine that a cobbler may be able to fix it, but is it really worth the cost? I don't think it will be.

Well I had a chat to my old mate Gohard. We know him here as an inmate that makes excellent quality hand made leather sheaths. I have a couple of his sheaths and they are superb in quality and comfort. He uses veg-tan leather and the ones I have are ageing very nicely.

We got chatting and I explained what I wanted. This is a complete different design to what he usually does. I wanted a sheath that looks pretty close to the OEM older style Surge sheath, but without the elastics and the hole at the bottom and the cut-out in the top. I measured it all up and he got to work his magic. I did not want another untanned sheath and he suggested a light brown saddle colour. He found an excellent colour and started with it. The sheath is made from three pieces only and a belt tab on the back. The sides are the same leather but he thinned them to 1/2 the thickness. This enabled some stretch over time. The OHT has the side locking mechanism that needs to be catered for and the tool tapers towards the bottom. The belt tab is his usual +- 40mm tab that fits my belts perfectly. This leather is slightly softer that the ones he usually uses and decided to stitch the whole sheath all around. Then to top it off he stamped the bottom with a LM badge. Very smart and classy!!!

This is a very well made sheath and looks fantastic. The photo's don't do the colour justice. I think that this design will also work very well for the Wave/Charge range of tools.

Thank you very much Gohard for yet another excellent sheath!!!

Cheers guys

Pete

Pics with the Surge in the OEM sheath.

Slightly smaller, but it makes a big difference on your hip.

Does the OG Surge actually fit in it? That would be really nice

It does, but the snap needs to move a little. It is also a little looser in the pouch. The OHT is quite a bit wider than the Surge and without the elastics the pouches are not as interchangeable. I have a few weeks of testing the pouch for Gohard.

Great design and well done. Looks easy to access and I like the colour.

Cheers, the colour is REALLY nice.
