well  i dont have much knowledge about this, only what they say at site but it sure looks useful to me so im just waiting it to apear to webshops

"DESCRIPTION:

The RAT Fire Kit is a “last-ditch” fire starter and mini survival kit container. The watertight capsule has plenty of storage space for tinder, fishhooks, line and other essential survival tools (user supplied). The Fire Kit can be clipped to a belt or vest, carried in your pack or put in the glove box of your vehicle. The compact size and light weight make this kit a very unique survival tool for hikers, adventurers, campers, hunters or anyone else who ventures into the wilds.

The RAT Fire Kit uses a removable / replaceable Misch Metal flint. It does not produce a shower of sparks like standard Ferro rods. When struck with a sharp edge, the Misch Metal flint produces small balls of molten particles that burn hotter and have a longer burn time than the sparks made by a standard fire flint. This rod has been proven to light difficult tinder that regular flint won’t, thus the reason for using this type of flint in a “last-ditch” survival kit. The Misch Metal flint requires a very sharp edge to strike. We suggest using the edge of your knife as a striker. This kit is a real survival tool, and in a true survival situation it won’t matter if you dull a small part of your knife’s edge in exchange for building a life-sustaining fire. "

Looks cool, but I don't like the sound of that.

Kit will not include the button compass shown in the photo.
Hmm, kinda weird for them to show prototype and ads with it but not include one in production unit. A button compass cost what, ten cents each?

I suppose the cost would be more from the set-up and time to fit them.  It is a shame that it isn't standard though.

here's a link to the compass http://www.bepreparedtosurvive.com/NavigationProducts.htm this is a great site in general.

and the ferro rod can be purchased separately here http://www.ratcutlery.com/tools.htm

I like the design, and don't mind adding my own inclusions.

well i think its good that it DOES NOT have compass from factory,so those who dont want it,dont havce to pay for it and its needless to pry it out from cap,to gain more space for some other items that would not fit with compass installed.and theres loads of different quality button compasses for different budgets.....if factory wants to keep the price cut down, they would have inserted some cheapo crappy one,but if tehy would have put some compass that meets military specifications,it would have raised the costs and so also the retail price.

Tarro and I have just been talking about survival gear.

this one looks good, but I'm wondering what the cost will be.

Reminds me of a Silva aluminum matchcase mated with firesteel.  It's probably easier to hold than the swedish firesteel.

very interesting....

i could easily do a SMALL run of these in lower finish as it takes time to do useless polishings, but i could use firesteels, all the rest stuff i have =  aluminium stock.

yep, ironhand sure is nice member to have here IMo,as i we seem to share same intrests.

im afraid that the RAT item will cost enormous amounts of money, compared to ACTUAL costs :-\,But still its nice and i would love to own one.
