Need a new SAK
on: April 07, 2018, 12:19:14 PM
I am in need of advice regarding a little project im working on.

Basically I have a pocket watch (brass watch and chain) i wear when i am booted and suited.  Watch goes in left waist coat pocket, chain fob is old coin in center, but i need new knife to go on right hand end of chain / pocket.

The problem i have is the clasic is just to small for my eyes these days (sadly im getting old) and the Spartan (normal edc) is just a little large for the chain / pocket as i normally have a small brass torch in that pocket too.

Unfortunately this means i need to splash the cash and buy another SAK.  Old or new is ok, but needs to be "socially acceptable" and look like it belongs in a gentlemans edc.

Suggestion?

Maybe a cadet? It's insanely thin and nice in the hand. It's probably the alox model that is the most different than its celidor counterpart (recruit, tourist?  84 mm). I originally bought one with red scales to mod but I ended up recreating it (with another blade shape).

I cannot recommend this one enough. Inserting old picture of mine with an electrician mod.

+1 on the Cadet, no excessive tool choices, large enough to be useful, small enough to be smart, would pair with pocket watch well. A Bantam would work too if you are looking for minimal tools and can stand the combo tool, which brings up the Compact, but it's the same size as the Spartan. Was thinking 84mm Golfer, but no keyrings on those.

How about the Vic Popular or Excelsior? I think the narrower frame give those a little classier look.

All good recommendations above.
Another consideration is the 74mm Ambassador.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Good idea FB, I overlooked the 74's.

There are metal scale options for those also.  :tu:

My first thought was "black Ambassador", but a black or silver alox Cadet would be a nice choice!

A 65mm Wenger Pocket Toolchest (discontinued) is a good choice.

I love my alox Minichamp. It packs an insane amount of useful tools into a package that is thinner than it had any right to be.  In my opinion it would be the perfect small SAK for your needs.

My vote goes to the Executive or even the new Wenger Esquire that Vic just came out with.  Slightly larger but will do anything you want.

I would recommend a stainless steel Director but I doubt you'll find one with a ring... A Cellidor or Alox executive would be cool too.

Otherwise if you want something simple and a tad bigger than a classic you could get a Wenger  Esquire or VIP.

An alox Secretary with keyring would be quite classy too.

Or Cadet like everyone else said :D

Good suggestions everyone

My votes.....
For ease of obtaining

First choice: Cadet - Larger, sturdier, openers, SDs, classier (alox)
Second: Executive - Scissors, nailfile

Or swap around if your preferences/needs are the other way around - e.g. need scissors

If you have time to dig around ebay some of the older 'gerntlemen's knives' would be great too

Sorry for the delay in replying, and many thanks for  the helpful suggestions.  I have not gotten my hands on a SAK with the combination tool (yet), somwhats the problem with them?  Is it the old jack of all trades, master of none situation or more it's not traditional so shouldn't have happened ?

There is no structural problem with them.
I LOVE the combo tool.
It opens cans and caps perfectly.

However,
It works on slotted screws as a screwdriver, but not on philips screws. The tip of the dedicated can opener does, while the cap lifter is a sturdy pry tool.

The combo tool is not as sturdy so it's not a great pry tool.
