I have a feeling he always played the same character but that is also what was so great and fun about him. R.I.P.

Now hopefully he is running with cadences, doing PT and counting pushups in a far better place

That's mostly because he wasn't an actor as much as he was a Drill Sargent, and so he was hired a lot to play the "Drill Sargent Type."
