Some unknown SAKs. Please help to identify them.
on: April 16, 2018, 03:08:43 PM
Hi All,

As probably all of you know - for identification of any SAK, probably the best way is SAKwiki.com.
But sometimes we've faced with situation, when some models (or modifications) unfortunately are absent there.

I have in my collection few knives, which I cannot identify not with SAKWiki either other resources.
Hope, someone will be able to help me with this.

So, lets start.

# Unknown knife 1. I've called it "Equestrian Minus" :)
It looks like regular 111-mm Equestrian, but.. doesn't have a wood-saw.

# Unknown model, which I've called "Troubleshooter II". In comparison with original Troubleshooter, it has a wood-saw instead of metal-file.

First two may be mods?

The third one probably a OD scaled Hunter (see the 108mm Hunter page on SakWiki).

I thought that it could be a mod, but after removing scales them (I've shared these photos on FB earlier also),  me and other people agreed that they're a fabric-run, not a custom mod.

The third one probably a OD scaled Hunter (see the 108mm Hunter page on SakWiki).

Could be. I never saw any image of such modification (OD +serrated blade). Did you?

As far as I know there are serrated and unserrated Hunters, and SakWiki mentions an Identifier Number for OD scales (although I never seen it on a Hunter). So I suppose if there are both serrated ad unserrated red ones, the OD will probably also be available in both serrated and unserrated versions.

I'd have to go along with glenfiddich1983, about the first two. No reference of such tool set.

No clue. Maybe someone ordered a batch of knives with a custom toolset (although in that case I would expect a company logo or something like that). Or maybe it was a model that was only available for a short period... maybe you could try to find old catalogs from those years and try to find the model there.

It would certainly be interesting if we as SAK community could try to gather and archive all catalogs from all years and make it available for everyone
I would certainly be willing to offer the webspace to host all these catalogs (I have a paid Dropbox account with plenty of space available)  :salute:

IIRC, Swiss Bianco had Victorinox make special runs for him of custom knives. These were only available through him until they ran out. I'm not suggesting he had these made, but if he was able to do it, certainly others could as well. I'm presuming that with the scales off it was determined the rivets were machine peened with the same kind of tooling marks Victorinox peening would leave - eliminating a custom mod being the source (or at least reducing the likelihood to near zero). Not that someone can't do machine type peening, but would presume it would have a different appearance.

# Unknown 108-mm model. Fireman with Trooper scales? Or it has an unique name?

I think that is a Victorinox Mauser LeaF

Would be my best guess as well. Someone put Trooper scales on a Fireman. The Safari Hunter has a smooth gutting blade, not a serrated. I've put different scales on some 111mm SAKs, swapping out red ones for OD scales, usually dual density if I can get those, so I don't consider scales swapping to be anything unusual.

Looking at the SAKwiki Hunter 108mm page under variations #1, I would say this is a Hunter with OD scales (0.87 80.04)
