Any love for Bear and Son?
on: May 24, 2017, 06:39:00 PM
Hey everyone, I noticed there isn't a thread for Bear and Son knives, so I figured I'd start one. I have two (currently :D) and while both are good blades, the quality just isn't quite up there with other companies like Buck, Case, Colonial, or KaBar. I've read mixed reviews online, but wondered what you guys thought of them. I'll start with my Peanut and my Barlow.

I have their Multitools but no knives. I've heard things but have no way of verifing the opinions so wont repeat them. The Multitools I have are of good quality.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

  • Geometry cuts but the steel determines how long.

I haven't had a chance to see one up close, so I can only go by reviews I've heard & read.
The reviews seem to be mixed.

Thanks Poncho! They're both beautiful knives. Overall the quality on these two at least is very good. The peanut needs some edge work done, but is otherwise a great little knife :like:

The only one I have is this fixed blade that I keep around as a backup hunting knife;

It's alright, and has withstood some rough treatment over the years. But I prefer my Ka-Bar skinner.

I've got a couple of trainer balisongs (legal to own in my state), an official boy scout knife, and a carbon Barlow. The barlow is OK but doesn't seem to want to take an edge. The tip on the main blade is warped a little as well. The Boy Scout knife is junk. The balisongs are decent, but nothing earth shattering.
That is the extent of my experience with the brand. Not great but I've had worse.

 :tu:. My Peanut seems to be that way too. It cuts okay, but the edge looks like it would take a lot of work to sharpen if the knife ever got dull.  I've never seen any of their scout knives before. Do you have any pics of it?

Some of my traditional style Bear & Sons made knives.
Two "Keen Kutter" marked.
Red bone canoe.
Red bone Barlow.

Three "Bear & Sons" / "Bear Mfg" marked.
Stag Handle 2-blade(can't remember style).
Sunburst bone handle polished stainless trapper.
Thick Stag handle Damascus blade trapper.

Five "Remington UMC" marked.
Green bone R-63 marked.
Bullet badge brown bone handle R2253.
Bullet badge camping knife jigged delrin handles R3843.
Bullet badge red bone lockback w/ folding guard R1373.
UMC badge brown jigged delrin R-3.

Sorry I am not familiar with styles. I typically don't buy a lot of traditionals, but some of these just spoke to me. :o I am growing an interest in the traditionals and used to buy a lot of them (case, buck, etc). Now I am finally going through a decade of buying traditional knives w/o learning about them. :ahhh
