Leatherman Skeletool CX, a star in plain sight.
on: April 17, 2018, 07:16:46 PM
When I saw the Skeletool I thought like many it was a terrific option.  Is it a knife with pliers or a pliers with knife?  Who cares, it seemed perfect for off days.  SEEMED.   I bought one new and just didn't get along with it.  I cannot recall why nor is it important.  I think I sold it or traded it.  Good riddance.

Years later I got another.  This time the CX which is ascetically pleasing and has a nice blade.  Yet again I was disappointed.  I'm not exactly sure why.  Into my box of MTs it went.  I think a year later or more even I figured I try it again.  Glad I didn't sell it off or trade it.  I've learned my lesson with doing that.  What the HECK!!!!   Why is this tool so awesome now?

I really have no idea why now this tool is such a terrific tool to me.  While I carry it on off days only and only when I feel I may need larger pliers its awesome.   Knife or Pliers?   Who cares.  I really enjoy this tool more than I thought I would ever since trying the Skeletool a few times.

One complaint I've heard is that if you have one bit in, so you can have two with you, the bit in the driver bites into the hand when using the pliers.

Another, if I recall correctly, is that the lockbar slides open easily when using the knife due to where the pressure is when gripping the knife.

Maybe you can shine some light on that, if it's true (about the knife lockbar)?

Love my CX!  If it had scissors, it might replace my PX.

There is one double ended bit in the bit holder and one double ended bit in the frame.  I keep the phillips in the bit driver and while mine has not bit me I can see how that can happen.

Disengaging the liner lock.  Again I can see how this can happen.  I'm a lefty so for me the possibility is vey small.  For right handers I can see a possibility but it seems very small.

I wasn't actually loving the carabiner.  I dont drink or need a bottle opener.  I have used it to attach to my belt loop and actually like carrying it that way sometimes.  For me it goes unnoticed as such.  The look of this particular Skeletool is quite appealing.

I want to like it soooo bad that I have 4 of them, I think the reason I haven't got along with them is the odd position the tool is in when using the driver.
And as mentioned by stoneshank the bit digging a crater in the palm of your hand. Maybe if it was the size of the Signal... the Signal that's another story.
Maybe I will give them another chance and maybe the Skeletool will win me over. lot of maybes there Aloha.

I dont find the position using the driver bad.  I either open the arm with the driver at 90 or every position up to full.  90 works most every time for me tho there are times when I use the extender and open all the way.

Maybe stowing the Phillips bit eases the digging in for me?  That part of my hand is rather thick and tough also.  Would I take this tool over my Charge to work?  No way.  I like having it on days off.  With the 154CM blade, pliers, and bits I feel pretty prepared for most things that come up.  I think pairing with a Mircra for scissors makes a lot of sense.

I hear you tho Colt.  I sold off my brand new Skeletool after about a week or two of trying to like it.  Its interesting how trying this tool again in a different role helped me see it real potential for my purposes.

I might have to thank Kam to some extent  :salute:.  While I liked Evils heavily modded Skeletool is awesome I fine with the Skeletool out the box.

Does anyone have any pictures of his Skeletool? I can't seem to get any of the pictures to load and would love to see what it's all about!

I went years wanting to buy a Skeletool but thinking it wasn't heavy duty enough or didn't have enough tools for me. I prefer ordered a surge when they just came out then went to a super tool 300 because of the replaceable wire cutters. I fence a lot on he farm and the replaceable cutters work well for barbed wire and high tensile wire.

I finally bought myself a Skeletool for my birthday last month and now I love the skeletool! I retired my super tool to my fencing trailer and daily a Skeletool instead. My hip thanks me!

Alright then, sounds like a week challenge. I'll carry one for 7 days starting Monday.

It took me a few tires to like this tool.  I almost sold it off but liked the look of it so it remained in the stable.

I suppose it depends where you are coming from. Besides Chinese knockoffs, the Skeletool was my first brand multitool, and the quality was sooo much better. If you already own a Surge, or a Vic Spirit, it may come over as a bit flimsy and under tooled.
Sure, there are a few hotspots with the design, and it may pinch you if you are careless, but the design in itself is out of this world (Alien anyone?), and I love it.
Another point is that it's a light weight medium size pliers tool,  and when weight is more important then a bundle of tools, and you dont want to go mini tool, it is in a class of it's own.
I carried my Skeletool for years as my only pocket tool, and I got my money out of it many times over  :salute:
