Which edged weapon would you take.........
on: April 20, 2018, 07:28:31 AM
I watch forged in fire and enjoy seeing all the historical weapons the last two contestants have to make.  It got me wondering....  What edged weapon would I take into battle?

If you had to pick two edged weapons to take into battle which would you take?

IT depends very much on what form the combat will take....

Deep thoughts aside,I rather like the idea of a gladius. Second choice would be a toss up between a tomahawk of some sort(probably a Vietman style tactical one) or a khukri
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

To be honest, and I'm being totally serious here and I've thought about it a lot, I'd choose a spade. Nobody... but nobody is going to mess with me armed with a garden spade... It's the perfect weapon for Fuzzy.

Definitely some form pole arm and a dagger.

Pole arm will hopefully make up for the complete lack or real skill with a bladed weapon.

Dagger.....well by that time most likely it's too late.

I don’t have training in any form of combat....
I’ll probably take a ghillie suit.

I'd take a fast horse in any other direction to be honest.  :D Otherwise, assuming I had the training to use it, a longbow. I like the idea of being able to strike while not having to engage in a melee. If it had to be close combat, an axe of some kind. A pole axe assuming I had the training. It combines a bunch of features which are incredibly versatile. Anything but a sword though.

I would secure a shovel to each arm and whirl around like a helicopter until all my enemies were dispatched. Then I would dig their graves two handed for speed.

as Matt Easton says, CONTEXT!  :pok:

Am I in an army or do I stand alone?
What era and time period is this, what weapons and armor do my opponents have?
Are they an army, a battalion, a couple guys, or a legion?
What's the terrain like? And the battlefield? Open spaces, indoors, tunnels, trenches, fields, mountains, desert, snow, jungle,...
Do they have vehicles, or horses, or do they all march on their feet?
...  :ahhh

but given most scenarios, my edged weapon would probably be a bayonet at the end of a loaded rifle   :D
Or more seriously on topic, a polearm and a kukri for close quarters  :salute:

As far as skills I also have none.  As to context, .  I wasn't thinking too far ahead obviously

A little more context.

This would not be a gladiator arena.  This would not be one on one per se but certainly could.  You would be in your town/city/country.  You pick the season.  You would be defending your neigborhood with a small group ( possibly family or neighbors ) against foes with only edged weapons as well.  You have no clue which edged weapons they'd have.  Like any foe their weapons would be only known once they were upon you.

Obviously the details are totally up to your imagination.   My thought was more about what edged weapon you feel of any historical weapons you'd carry.  I know training plays a big part.  Farmers used tools they had on hand to defend themselves and were quite effective.  When hoards attacked they used their weapons of choice be it swords, axes, pole weapons, etc.  We have an "advantage" seeing all the historical weaponry.  Maybe you have a favorite/s?  Maybe you've also seen Deadliest Warrior?  After seeing so many of the FIF challenges and the neat historical weapons it just go me thinking.

I'm really in which edged weapon you fancy "IF" you had to chose.

I am leaning towards a pole weapon like the Chinese Ji and Filipino Kampilan.  Again I have zero edged weapon training or knowledge.  These two seem from my unskilled mind formidable in the right hands.

I like knives and swords and even shovels, but I don't want to have to fight with any of them.  Never bring a knife to a gun fight.

I'm sorry, but the answer to 'what bladed weapon do you bring to a fight' has been the same for thousands of years.

A spear.

After that, it gets tricky, but for me as a backup? A spear head that can also be used as a dagger.

Skill level is irrelevant. With two equally matched opponents, the guy with the spear wins, and with two unequally matched opponents, the less skilled guy with the spear still wins against the moderately capable swordsman. Only a great disparity allows sword to beat spear, and at that point, the weapons no longer matter.

Oh, wait... I changed my mind, a karambit, with a backup of some pointless ninja weapon.... I'll go... ninja climbing claws.

Sorry if this seems like a strong opinion, but I have LITERALLY all of history backing me up on this.

I'm with Lynn - a spear - keeping the other person's blade at a distance is almost everything with edged weapons.

Be that as it may, having no training or skill with said spear, I would take a .45 ACP 1911.

Another vote for a bayonet on a loaded rifle, probably an M-4 carbine (Have a fair amount of experience with ARs. Very little with edged weapons.)

As far as edged weapons go, a halberd is probably most effective in trained hands. That's why royal bodyguards regularly carried them. However I've never seen real halberd practice.

Naganata and dao.

For edged weapons.

Have other preferences if we have non-banging ranged and/or banging ranged.

As a badass Finn, I'd probably go with a Skrama and a pair of Jääkäripuukkos, you know, since I have them in my possession like right now...  :D

However, since I'm giving one away, I guess I'll have to manage with only Skrama...

I completely agree with the whole spear versus sword statement. I am partial to a boar spear myself. Mind you, I do happen to have a Cold Steel one.  >:D
