Short and to the point. From the spare parts of my FIRST build, I made this... a bladeless 2-layer build. The opener layer and a scissors layer.

I ground the edge off the awl, flattened the tip and reshaped it into a mini screwdriver (eyeglass screw size).

Hopefully now it's TSA compliant, and thus its name 'TeSsA'.

Putting this thing together was only about a million times easier than my first, and the peening looks (and probably is) much better. My only issue is that the scissors are from an early 70s Huntsman that had an old spring. I managed to punch the broken remnant out, and Victorinox sent me a 'replacement' spring, but the replacement spring is for the new, larger hole, and simply won't fit in the smaller old hole, so no spring in the scissors.

Second in a series of many I'm sure.

Of course, now you have to fly somewhere to check that TSA is ok with it. And as TSA rulings seem a bit arbitrary you might need to fly many places for statistical significant results. Ah, the fun security lines and random decision making - good times..

UPDATE!

Because I'm crazy, and apparently have an utter 'what's the worst that could happen' mentality, I decided to see if I could mod the scissor spring to work.

First, I used the dremel to cut off a tiny portion of the loop on the scissor spring. I had absolutely no idea how much to remove, so simply eyeballed it.

I then used the pliers on a MP600 to slightly crush the loop, to (hopefully) make it fit in the older style hole.

Then, I wriggled the thing, and cussed some, and finessed... then some more cussing. Gave up in disgust, had some soda, back to wriggling and cussing and...

With a grinding 'crunch' sound that I was pretty certain meant 'you have permanently F***ed that up'... it actually popped into place.

Wohooooo!!  :ahhh

Notice, this is an older style spring, without the little spoon-shaped divot. But apparently not quite old enough to have fit the tool unmodified. Still, it worked.

Awlsome work and nice tweeking to the spring. I have one that I similar but I have a "full" opening layer with the corkscrew instead of the awl

[It's not failure if you learn something from it]

If I had had a phillips sitting around, instead of two corkscrews as donor parts, I'd have done that. I worked with what I had.

And thanks all for the comments.

Well done! I also have that feeling that I'm far out what I'm comfortable with, sometimes. It's great when it works!

Sadly, the TSA would probably not approve of the awl. I'm not sure anything on the backside would be approved.

I did the best I could to change it from being a death-murder-stabby-weapon into something less harmless. It now has NO edge and the tip is turned into a flathead screwdriver.

That doesn't mean they'll actually CARE that it's not a stabby bit. And there's nothing I can do about that... but I've done what I can. Until some ridiculously cheap beat-up Tinkers show up on ebay to scavenge for backside phillips, there isn't much I can do.
