What some people will do to get their fix of adrenaline !

It's a bit sad to see how many of them have died recently (but hardly surprising)   :(

Still, I have wondered why the military hasn't tested any wingsuit special forces paratroops, I mean you could deploy them like 50 km away from the target...

I think casualty rates would be unacceptably high -- even without enemy fire.

Hell no indeed!

From a Norwegian birthday celebration on a TV show some years ago... A meter or two difference and they could have wiped out an entire cast.

Stick to skydiving from planes, if you do it right it’s relatively safe....

I'd be in or some of that.  The skydiving and wingsuit definitely, especially that one near the end where the two planes full of skydivers collided in mid air, and they all HAD to jump!  Luckily no one was killed in that accident as I recall- one plane was able to land and the pilot of the other managed to bail out in time.

The BASE jumping seems interesting to me as well, although the cartwheel off a cliff probably wouldn't happen.  I am also doubtful that I could force myself off of whatever I was supposed to be jumping off of as these days I seem to have developed a crippling fear of heights that puts me in an almost catatonic state.  I blame my foot/ankle injuries that make it unsafe for me to walk pretty well anywhere, let alone a place where proper footing will make the difference between life and death.  I may be reckless, but I'm not an idiot.

Speaking of idiocy, the parachute hooked into the guys' flesh seems more than a bit moronic, and I don't even see there being the potential for any joy from that.  I may be into some weird stuff, but that is beyond even me.  I get enough holes poked in me by real life, I don't need to do it for thrills.

Oh yeah, and there is no way in Hell I would subject my dog to that kind of crap either, and not just because my dog is 135lbs and they don't make a wingsuit capable of holding both of us.  If you want to risk your own life, that's your choice.  Don't subject an animal to it when they aren't capable of understanding the risks.  That constitutes abuse in my mind.

Humans are some wacky creatures.  I've watched BASE jumping before and WHOA.  This looks insanely fun for those that dare.   I was recently reading about the Dawn Wall climb and documentary.  Thats also some insane fun for those that dare.

I'd call that controlled falling not flying.

I feel bad if a bird crashes into my window cuz it didnt know any better.  If a human did, I wouldnt feel bad, he knew better.  Someone hitting one of those buildings at first speed would be quite the splat.

I have no plans of jumping off anything anytime soon, parachute or not. I once fell through a scaffolding 6 meters up, and that was more than enough excitement for me.

I'm not sure what is wrong with Norwegian TV shows with all these basejumps, but this one actually went seriously sideways. The presenter just turned away and found a quiet rock to sit on - he was sure the guy was done for.

That seems like an unnecessary complication to something that should have otherwise been pretty well straightforward and safe.  I mean, if he had just taken a bit of a run and jumped straight off the cliff he'd have been fine- why add to that with something that really had nothing to do with the experience?

When you see movie stuntmen getting ready for something they take as many variables out of the equation as possible so that way there's a lot less that could go wrong.  I am in agreement with those guys when they that you can do stupid things, as long as you don't do them stupidly.  And, quite honestly, I am pretty sure I don't want a surgeon working on me that would even consider doing something that dumb.

I guess the television might be to blame for that - running and jumping off a 1200m high cliff was probably not exciting enough?

If I remember correctly this was a TV show about people who do what others considers as crazy. (This would qualify for sure!). So it wasn't really about showing the jump as such as it was about these guys leisure activities. That said, surgeons would seem to be horrible stuntmen based on all data I've seen so far :D

On the flip side, if this guy has some action itch to scratch I'd prefer that he does it in his leisure time rather than while operating? Or maybe it is finicky daily work that drives him to want to jump off cliffs? I don't know - I guess that was the content of the TV show but nobody remembers that anymore :D

Still, I have wondered why the military hasn't tested any wingsuit special forces paratroops, I mean you could deploy them like 50 km away from the target...

Becuase you can do the same thing with a High Altitude/High Opening jump with equipment that is already in inventory. A wingsuit still requires a parachute, and for aerodynamic reasons you can't have a ruck with you, or even really a chest rig and anything bigger than a very small SMG.

Wingsuits look cool. But a conventional ram air chute allows you to be capable.
