Where to tuck a toothpick on a Midnite MiniChamp?
on: April 21, 2018, 02:12:23 PM
I'm a new owner of a Midnite Minichamp and one thing that it doesn't have, (due to an LED and pen in the scales), is a toothpick.
For me, it's the only thing missing.  If I need tweezers, I prefer my dedicated ones in my medicine cabinet.

This morning I tried to figure out where a little toothpick could fit.  Maybe tuck it under one of the tools, but noooo, those tolerances are tight.  I cut the meaty part of the toothpick off in hopes that I might tuck it under the Phillips because that is the widest tool, but noooo, those tolerances again.  :ahhh

Has anyone figured out a way to tuck a toothpick into a Midnite MiniChamp?

FB,
There is no practical way to put the toothpick onboard from what I can tell. Best thing to do would be to drop a classic in the bottom of a pocket or on a keychain. Then, just in case you're away from home, you'll also have tweezers.

I think you're right gerleatherberman.  It's a shame because this little Midnight MiniChamp is so ideal.
Pen - check
LED - check and bright too
package opener - check
blade - check, two of 'em
nail file - check
scissors - check
Phillips - check
bottle opener - check
ice cream sampling spoon at 31 flavors - check

It just amazes me how much utility is in it.
I'm wondering if I could gut some paracord and tuck it in a little lanyard?

That sounds like a good idea with the lanyard! Please post whatever you figure out with it.
I got a minichamp in a Vic lot purchase that has the red led. I didn't know it was a midnight version though.   :ahhh

It is a neat little knife though. I hadn't realized the minichamp had so many implements in it. :)

One of two reasons why I did the scales mod on one of mine  ;)
The other was the tweezers.

I carry a Cross pen and a Maglite Solitaire LED.
There's no place I could find to tuck in a toothpick.

The white LED is quite adequate.  It doesn't replace a flashlight, but I am impressed with the output for it's size.

I do have pocket pens and little LEDs like the Nitecore Tube (which is amazing), but I was just trying to lighten up the pocket and this Midnite MiniChamp is so very close!

Is there a model difference between the white LED and Red LED? Or is the red LED version just older?
Some of this Victorinox model differentiation confuses me. :ahhh

I'm not sure about that as this is my first bright white LED I've ever had.  I've owned some dimmer red ones.
This is the model number of my Midnite MiniChamp:

First attempt:
About 8 inches of paracord with 3 strands removed.  I kept the other strands in for support:

Put flame on tips to close the ends:

Cut a little slit in the paracord, not too much as to keep the toothpick tight in there:

See the fit.  I think I may try a longer cord next time so that I can put a proper toothpick with the meaty end.

Wonder what they should be called, LanyardCaddies, ParaPockets?

Update: The proper toothpick does fit:

You're welcome.  I'm thinking I'm going to singe the opening where the toothpick fits so it doesn't unravel.  Also, the smaller the slit the better I think as paracord does stretch.

See the SAKWiki page for the MiniChamp and its discussion about the Midnite MiniChamp.
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=MiniChamp

Follow the links for the LED feature to the brief page on the LED MiniLight:
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=LED-MiniLight

The USA Victorinox site only lists one MidNite MiniChamp, which I would presume has the new bright white LED. You would have to inquire with Victorinox to determine if they offer the red LED model. The red LED was the first one used on the MiniChamp, Rambler (aka Manager) and Classic SD. There are some applications in which a red LED is desirable as it doesn't ruin night vision. Those applications are a niche market, however, and those that need red flashlights have sources for them.

Here (https://www.edcforums.com/threads/how-to-carry-tweezers-toothpick-and-sak-pen-in-a-allox-minichamp.126485) is a similar solution from a few years ago on another forum.
Thank you for the link, I like his solution too.

I always have an alox Mini Champ in a leather pouch on my belt.

It is amazing what the Mini Champ is capable of doing!

The orange peeler blade is excellent for opening clamshell packs.

The small curved blade is great for cutting flaps off of boxes.

The cuticle pusher (spoon) can act as a small pry bar, screwdriver, etc

I have even used it in the nail nick of a  knife blade to open the blade if my thumbnail was broken.

Also remember that you can open an opposing tool such as the phillips screwdriver when you use the spear blade to extend the handle for a more comfortable grip.( the same idea works when using some of the other tools...when using the orange peeler I open the spoon to extend the handle)
