You're welcome, Wspeed!

So far today I realized one important thing about the Access Deluxe. They did fairly well on the amount of capability vs. the tool's cost. Except the file. I think SOG labeled the "file' incorrectly. The proper name is 'butter knife' or 'butter spreader'. :tu:

Hello guys, as a long time lurker I have to chime in on this particular multitool.I have never used a SOG multi and found this model ticking a lot of boxes for my uses. So I thought I would dip my toes in the SOG waters with the PAD. I ordered from Amazon and received it on friday. I EDC'd it at my job on sat. for 12 hrs. Used the pliers a few times nothing hard or heavy. No cutting wires, no use of any of the tools. Today I was sitting and watching youtube relaxing just fliping out the blades and tools. I noticed that the side with the bit driver seemed a little tight.I thought I would flip that side out a little more thinking that it would loosen up after a few cycles. I barely worked that side 10 min. when "snap" one of the small arms that springs the lock tabs broke. I was shocked, this is supposed to be from the "industrial tool" line. These arms appear to be what could be a weak point as they are no thicker than toothpicks.I really wanted to like this tool but alas its going back. Not a good first impression for SOG.

Welcome to MT.o, overclock! Sorry to hear what happened!
I am in no way running to SOG's defense,  but some spring tabs on other locking MTs (ex. Leatherman ST300, Rebar, and some others) are about the same thickness(about a toothpick) and don't snap.
In recent years,  SOG has released a bunch of new multitools that share one thing in common. That is poor manufacturing techniques. This has ultimately led to a significantly higher number of "modern SOG designs" having major failures.
You have two ways to approach the problem from my perspective.
1. Return the tool to the retail source you purchased it from for a refund. Then buy something with a better reputation (ex. LM ST300 or Victorinox SwissTool)
OR
2. Fill out the return process on SOG's website and send it in for "repair or replacement".

I would send it in for replacement myself. But, that boils down to how much you liked the tool before it failed. SOG is good about replacing broken tools. But, that is no guarantee it won't happen again.
So it is a roll of the dice sending it in to SOG, as the replacement may fail as well. On the other hand, the other options(Leatherman and Victorinox ) are quite a bit more expensive. So you could theoretically send it back to SOG multiple times before reaching the cost of the other brands. Your odds of receiving a better "checked" tool from a replacement at SOG are good.
Whatever you choose to do, we welcome you to MT.o, overclock!

Indeed. Very true!

I know SOG has made huge attempts at being innovative, but they should have stuck with just two things on the old models.
1. Use an independently installed piece of spring steel (ex. Piano lock cut springs or single spring for all tools). As a new spring can be riveted into the handle if it breaks AND trying to spring harden a small portion of the newer style steel frame is iffy at best.
2. U-shape handle frame. The new Two-piece frame instead of the older u-shaped frames lead to handle breakage. BUT! If they would use a piece of independently spring-hardened steel for the locks, they could properly harden the two piece frame to a reasonable level and avoid frame breakage under heavy pressure .

From my observations, these seem to be a majority of the issues. QC based issues include screw tightness, poor file cutting, and iffy tool hardening processes.

Hey guys, thank you for the warm welcome. I've lurked here off and on for several years and yes I love multitools so this site is great. I own many Leathermans ,also had and lost a Swisstool Sprirt X  (loved it). Lately I've been EDCing a Gerber Centerdrive.Like I said this was my first SOG and while I was impressed with the compound plier I wound up requesting a refund.I hope that you guys have better luck than me with this tool. I just think the basic design of those spring arms is poorly executed.I did snap a few pics on my cell phone and tried to attach them but the files were to big. I will try again. At this point I'm wondering if a SOG is in my future, I don't know. Maybe a Powerlock or Powerassist. Why is the Powergrab gone?

Hi overclock :tu:
Sorry to hear that you had to go for a refund
I just hope you haven’t been put off by SOG
The ones you mentioned look to be a good choice
Like you this is my first SOG
So yes I am a bit disappointed that I had to
Send it back, but I do want to give SOG a
Chance, as with any new model there can always
Be teething problems
Hope you get better luck with your next tool  :tu:

*What Wspeed said! :tu:

Overclock,
The PowerGrab was another high-failure MT, that was only available for a few months. Quite collectable now!
The PowerLock 2.0 is rock solid and while it is a very old design in the MT world, it is time-tested as a reliable and strong MT.

So, if you'll keep an eye on the upcoming PowerAccess Deluxe challenge, maybe that will either confirm your experience OR encourage you to try the PAD again. :tu:

Perhaps in a month or two, SOG will have tweaked the PAD design and re-release it. :multi:

The regular Access has the exact same spring system and that doesn't seem to be a common issue. I am hoping that spring breakage is a very rare problem. Although, as I keep running my mouth to say (hoping SOG will listen), trying to temper a little piece of spring steel inside of a hard steel handle is inherently going to have more failures than a piece of independently spring tempered steel riveted to the handle insides (like the older locking SOGs).

Update
Got a email from Chris@SOG yesterday
Here is a copy of the email:

We got the tool and have already done some diagnosis on it.

There were a couple issues we found and looking into the root cause.  Basically, one the handles we not hardened properly and the tolerance on a couple pieces were off.

Thanks again for sending it in and helping us diagnos problems.

Cheers

Chris

And got a email from Chris@SOG this morning to say
That the replacement PAD is being posted to me today :mail:

SOG really needs a winner this time. I know the loses from the PowerGrab and poor sales of the PowerPlay were a big loss on their MT division budget.
The regular Acces has proven fairly successful, but that tool doesn't fill the needs of their heavy-duty fan base. The PAD is promising.

It’s now up to SOG to make sure
That quality gets better
They know what was wrong
With my PAD, after I send it back to SOG
So I hope that they are doing something
About these teething problems
As already said the file is no good
But I found the rest of the PAD really nice
And it would be a shame if QC
let’s SOG tools go down the drain  :tu:

I love my power access, but have always worried about the lock bar springs being flimsy. Was not happy to see the breakage here.
