Fenix LD15R Flashlight
The everyday carry scene is huge and covers a variety of products that people feel are essential to covering what they need on a day to day basis. One item that I see quite a lot of is flashlights. Personally I have never carried a flashlight before on a daily basis, nor had I ever seen the reason to add one to my carry. The times I've needed one were rare and should the occasion arise I had one in a pinch by using my smartphone. The amount of edc pics I've seen that incorporate flashlights was so immense that I decided to see what all the fuss was about. How often would I use one and what situations would occur that I may need one over my aforementioned smartphone.
One of the lights I chose for testing is the Fenix LD15R. Right angle flashlights are unique and are becoming quite popular. Compared to traditional flashlights where the lens and body are parallel to each other; a right angle has a head that's positioned 90 degrees to the body. These style of lights are good because they incorporate some abilities and features you don't see on the standard lights.
The Fenix LD15R is a right angle light that comes in at 2.8 inches in length and 3/4 of a inch in diameter. This light is very compact for it's functionality and power and goes unnoticed when carrying it at 1.4oz.
This powerhouse runs on a rechargeable 16340 li-ion battery that is similar in size to a CR123A battery. As a matter of fact this light has the ability to run off both the rechargeable and a standard CR123A. Keeping the light juiced up is easy thanks to its micro usb port on the side of the light. Simply plug up the light with the included charging cable. Battery life is monitored by indicator light that's in the tail switch. When plugged in it will remain red until fully charged and will turn green when finished. Checking the battery level is easy too; when the light is off press the tail switch one time to display the battery level. Solid green means 100%-85%, flashing green from 85%-50%, red constant from 50%-25% and flashing red from 25%-1%.
The type of blub thats this light uses is a Cree XP-3G white LED and it also has two red LED bulbs. The light produced by the Cree is white light as opposed to some that have a yellow tint. The red lights are good for retaining night vision and other functions. To access the different functions of the light you depress the tail cap button to turn it on. The light has a memory mode so it will come back on with the last mode you had it. Press and hold the tail switch for a second and that will turn it on to the last setting, tap the switch to cycle through the settings. The main bulb has four settings; low, medium high and turbo. To access the red light functions you need to hold the button for two seconds while the light is on. The red light has three settings; constant, beacon and SOS. To get back to main light mode press and hold the switch for two seconds again. The main light modes have these lumens in order: 3 lumens, 30 lumens, 150 lumens and 500 lumens. When using turbo the light will step down to 200 lumens after 5 minutes to prevent overheating.
This light produces quite range of brightness and can handle everything from reading a map in low light to using it to fix a roadside repair. This light comes with a two way pocket clip that makes it extremely versatile. I normally carry the light clipped to my right pocket with the head facing up. This position makes it easy to get in and out of my pocket. If I feel I'm going to run the risk of it coming out of my pocket I flip the clip around. The clip in this position has a little more retention and it doesn't slide out unless it's intentional. The two way clip is not only good for pocket carry, when I need to be hands free I'll clip it to the collar of my shirt. Need another method of carry? This light also features a magnet in the tail. The magnet allows you to attach the light to any iron based metal and it's ability is only limited by your imagination.
Some other things to mention, the light is hard anodized so it can handle being dinged around and resists scratches. The light has polarity protection so if you put the battery in backwards it doesn't mess up the light. When you remove the battery for replacement the tail caps magnet holds onto the battery making retrieval easier. When using the included rechargeable battery it has a low voltage warning. When the light is on and needs charging the tail cap will blink every three seconds. The light is also water and dust resistant so you don't have to worry about those moments when you have butterfingers.
