Syph007 does it again
on: May 01, 2018, 06:19:17 PM
A few weeks back I was hypothesizing about my 'grail' SAK. For reasons I don't understand, Victorinox doesn't make it. I thought of it as an Alox Huntsman. Another MTo member mentioned that the design had been discussed as being a "Farmer X".

Well, I love the Farmer. What could be better? A Farmer X.

The bug really set in, and I contacted Syph007. I have one of his Urban Pioneers and so was familiar with the quality of his work. And that darned Marc had been raving about his "Copperhead", which didn't help my SAK-lust. So, without my wife seeing, I shot Syph007 a PM and inquired about a Farmer X.

It turns out my timing was really good. Syph was working on a batch of SAKs and had a spare set of Ti scales and an extra saw blade. And he was willing to make one for me. I figured it would be a couple of months, but no. He was able to put it together in a weekend. I know I'm lucky, but that is ridiculously lucky.

My Farmer X arrived today. I'm over the moon.

Syph's attention to detail and finish are exceptional. I don't think I've ever had a SAK from the factory show up so clean and polished.

This Farmer X is built exactly as spec'd by me, but it has the feel of a Syph007 SAK: crisp "walk and talk", smooth opening, and polished components. Syph asked if I wanted a keychain/lanyard attachment. I said I wanted "slim and sleek". And that's exactly what I ended up with. I was delighted to find this Farmer X is both slimmer and lighter than a standard Fieldmaster or Huntsman. Four layers is as much as I like to EDC, Syph's Farmer X will be an EDC joy.

I've got my grail SAK. I might just go SAKMC........

THANK YOU, Syph007!   :salute: :salute: :salute:

Smurf...

I've been talking the Farmer X for months now...

The Urban Pioneer is a great sak too though! If I were you I'd have a hard time deciding which of both I'd take along...
Or just take both

Any pics of the UP?

Here's an old shot of the UP:

This is a great SAK, too. I carried it for the last 12 days during my road trip (with a couple days added on before and after). I love this SAK, but I found that I wanted to have a saw more than I wanted the Phillips. Hence the Farmer X.

I'm sure the Urban Pioneer will still see service as conditions dictate.

Then again, I can barely peen at the moment, let aside altering backsprings ::)

Tough to chose between Farmer X and Urban Pioneer....or a Copperhead.

I think they all have their place. The choice really pivots on your own preferences and uses. I like pocketable, small, but capable SAKs. In many ways, the SI is still the perfect SAK for me....but then I want scissors.....and a saw..... Farmer X.

That was sort of my thinking.

I really like having a small saw during outdoors activities (hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing).

Down at the coffee shop? Maybe a Phillips makes more sense.

Technically yes, tech no.. it all depends on which side you measure from? Cause the one is a Philips(1), the other is the two screwdriver/openers(2)+ the other 3..
