MiniTool MiniMakeOver
on: May 02, 2018, 01:05:13 AM
Last night I was deciding what to carry today and decided to go minimal (for me anyway). And picked out a MiniTool as my plier MT. Well, this older Mini(pat. pend) has the awful handle splay and I remember that is why I don't carry it much. I have a slightly newer Mini(with newer style reasonable handle splay), but that one is a unused shelf queen, so not going to carry that one. After I took and posted a few pics of Today's carry, I saw how scratched up it was. I don't mind scratches on my user tools, but decided I would take care of two issues while it was disassembled. One: the awful handle splay. Two: some of the mkre noticeable scratches.
Here are the pictures of this MiniJourney and its' MiniMakeOver.

Thanks for posting this makeover. What is handle splay?
You're welcome, mhsvz39! :tu:

If you're asking what handle splay is, then the best way to describe it is the width of the handles in relation to the plier head. If you have a pair of pliers with wide handle splay, the size of the item your hand can grip with the plier jaws is smaller. If the handle splay is narrow (handles closer together ), then your hand won't have to be opened as wide and you can grip larger items with the plier head.

If you're asking what the splay was, then I can show you. I didn't measure the MiniTool handle splay before I fixed it, but it was about as wide as the handle splay on this early JPST (about 2.6" - first picture).
After filing the stop slots for the plier head on the MiniTool, the splay is about 1.8"(second picture).
Now I can grab larger objects with the pliers and my hand won't be spread so wide gripping large items.
Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for the kind words, TP!
When I got done working on the MiniTool, it only seemed appropriate to celebrate with a Venti Cinnamon Dolce' Latte with Quad Espresso shots - no whip cream.
