Leatherman Skeletool CX abnormale coating wear
on: May 04, 2018, 09:37:12 PM
Recently I bought an Skeletool CX from a webshop.
The reason I choose the CX version was because of the DLC coating and the 154CM knife.

After 14 days of use I discovered there was some (wear) damage on the coating (on the inside where the pliers come together).
It is clearly to see that its just on one side of the frame (inside).

I've contacted the webshop and send the product back to them.
After just a few day's I got my product back, not replaced / repaired.

I've contacted the webshop again but they try to hide behind the supplier they say:
"Sorry we cannot help you, It is just something that can happen"

I understand tools can have wear overtime. 14 days of usages is just a bit too soon. I opened the tool somewhere around the 20 - 30 times.
I'm taking so much care of my tools. I never get this within the first weeks. It is so weird... even with this so called DLC coating.

I'm out of options.
To me it just looks like Leatherman made the screws on my Skeletool CX a bit to tight.
But nowhere I can claim guarantee I have for this tool.

Anybody got some tips? What should I do now.

Hi AAC and welcome to :MTO:
From what I can see it looks like normal wear

I just looked and mine has similar wear there. I have never noticed it before.
It looks like something that is bound to happen because of the design of the tool, having the rotating plier head rubbing against the frame.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine looks similar.  I have more wear since I've had mine for a lot longer than 2 weeks.  Enjoy the tool best you can or go with all SS and switch out the blade for a 154CM blade  :tu:

Welcome to  :MTO: AAC.  I think the coating is applied thick and will rub off on tighter points such as where the pliers nests in the frame. It won't affect performance of the tool and since it is an external coating and not a chemical process it was bound to happen. There's nothing you could do to avoid it.

It was a matter of time.  2 weeks use is relative.  Opening and closing the tool was bound to wear that area.  One side of mine is more worn than the other which is interesting.  I hope you can still enjoy your tool as its a pretty terrific tool.
