2.2 mm vs 2.25 mm brass pin stock for modding?
on: May 08, 2018, 04:44:18 PM
I have a question for the more experienced modders out there.

I'm looking into having my own brass pin stock made for my soon-to-launch modding career.   From what I gather, Vx uses 2.25 mm pin stock, but since there seems to be a global shortage of this size, most folks get by with 2.2 mm (which by itself seems hard to find as well).

So my question is this.  If you were going to have this pin stock made, would you have it made to 2.25 or 2.2 mm?

What other metallurgical qualities are important for this pin stock?  I'm wondering if anyone knows the hardness, precise alloy makeup, etc.

If I'm able to do it, I'd be looking to have a bunch made and share the resource with the modding community.  So I welcome any of your ideas and suggestions.

Thanks,

Myron

Measure the Victorinox pin size, measure the holes in the tools - and then work out what a 0.05 mm difference in diameter would change.  For reference, 0.05 mm is a little less than two thousandths of an inch, and is likely less than the tolerance on the diameter of the bar ...

As for material spec, you're probably looking for something with less Zinc for good cold forming, but with a higher hardness to enable use as a wear surface.  I suspect you'll be limited to grades that are actually available as round bar from the factory.

If I measure the inner pins from 91mm Saks they are exactly 2.20 mm.  This is what Vic uses and while not available in North America it's readily available from UK hobby stores.

PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.
