That's something I always wonder when I see SAKs with weird tools broken.  Currently, there's a Gran Prix on eBay right now with broken scissors, snapped off about a little over an inch from the handle. How the heck do you manage that? I can understand chipped drivers and somewhat mangled cap lifter screwdriver tips but that's about it.

Breaking scissors is truly ludicrous!

Magentus kindly offered to put a combo tool on the mod. I like that, and it caused me to change the plan, because now I don´t really need the opener layer any more. It would be nice if somehow the empty slot, left by the second corkscrew, could hold an awl, but otherwise I think it should be left empty.

Layer config:

1. large blade, combo tool, fluted corkscrew
2. saw
3. serrated blade, small blade, empty slot (cut corkscrew) or awl.

Backside Phillips wouldn´t fit, because there isn´t a scale cutout on this side (which is fine with me).

I like having a plain blade, a serrated blade, and a saw, in one single SAK. Victorinox doesn´t offer much choice here. In 111mm there´s the Fireman, now discontinued, and the Hunter XT. In 93mm they did a couple special runs for Swiss Bianco, the Carver SW. The only other one I can think of right now is the 108mm Fireman. It would be nice if Victorinox did a rerun of this one, let´s say a few million pieces. That would bring down the price to an affordable level.

There's been a 111mm Fireman on 2dehands for quite some time now.
Seller is asking €42.

I have no clue if that is a good price or not.
My guess is it isn't? Since it's unsold for so long...

Depends on the condition of the knife. In good condition it´s a bargain. Do you know which version, slidelock or liner lock?

Blade on shield side.
That makes it a liner lock if I'm not mistaken...

Yes. I buy NIB as a rule, though there are exceptions.

The blade on the Camper wasn´t that good, so I sent Mags another one, and a few extra parts to sustain his hobby.

The package is on its way and should arrive before the end of the week.

I'd say that price is a bit high. Mine cost $38, but it had been warming the Vic display of my local knife store since 2007 (I bought it in 2016).  I'm guessing that was the price tag it wore in 2007. I paid more than that for a Soldier M2008.

I’m thinking it could be possible to do it as 111mm build using both a slide lock and liner lock versions of the main blades.  You could even have one OHO and still be able to grab the nail nick on the other blade at least in theory.

Probably, yes. I´ve been thinking about a 130mm Ranger version too (I have the fodder but not the skills)

This is sounding more and more like a step up challenge.  I was thinking it would be a fun build at 111mm and now the 130mm seems like it would be something fun to dive into.

Well considering that this is still stuck in my head after a few days I have to ask what is your 130mm build idea?

I have not yet thought it through completely, the basic idea is the same -- a 3-layer knife with plain edge clippoint blade (slide lock), saw, and serrated edge spearpoint blade (button lock). No OHO blades. I don´t know whether it´s possible though.

In theory it should all work.  I haven’t had a ranger in over 20 years so I’ll have to do a bit of investigating/track down some for destruction purposes.  I’ve heard some of the people on the YouTubes mention that the handle shape could be different.  But if the slide lock is similar to the Vic slide lock than the two liners and scale could easily be modified to accommodate the slide lock.  On the Vic models the pins are different sizes but that’s easily fixed as well.
