30 day Stack challenge
on: May 14, 2018, 07:28:26 PM
Day 1

As I very much enjoyed my previous challenges I wanted to keep my monumentum, so after two Leatherman runs (Rebar and Juice) I decided to go with a SAK. You guys - at least the ones who voted - decided that it should be a Stack challenge, so I will have my Swisschamp as my primary tool. I'm pretty sure it will serve me well, very versatile, it's not called the champ for nothing. :)

I will start the challenge with the tool's introduction: I acquired this SAK used from our fellow member ThePeacent, and after a good cleaning and the addition of new scales it's almost like new. The plier jaws are very slightly bent, but they're perfectly functional, other than that there were minor scratches on the magnifier, but I managed to polish them out pretty well.

I'm looking forward for this month, although I don't expect any surprises, I know this is a very reliable multitool.  :climber:

Gene Stoner already expressed his intention of coming along for the 30 days, but anyone is welcome to join!

I´d like to do this. I´m not a challenge type of guy, but since this is about the SwissChamp, what could go wrong?

I´ll also be carrying my Opinel pruning shears and saw but will try and use the SwissChamp first.
My coworkers are going to poke some fun at me I think.  :D

For me, tomorrow will be day 1.

Day 2

Woohoo, happy start to the challenge. :mail: First I used the Swisschamp to open a nice big box, from which emerged my new SOG PowerPint! Later in the day I opened another package, that time with the scissors, some white paracord arrived, it will serve as anyard for a SAK with white scales.

I carried my black SwissChamp in a black leather belt pouch, during my work day. The tools I used were hoe, rake, shovel, and shears. None of these are available on the SwissChamp of course, so I had to use regular garden tools instead. And at the one moment I could have used the Champ, I automatically reached for the Bushcrafter in my right back pocket. ´Twas only afterwards I realized I made a mistake.

Day 2 - Showing off my stack SAKs

My challenge tool, the black SwissChamp, with a Champion and a Handyman. The Champion is one of my oldest SAKs. I retired it in favour of the SwissChamp after about 25 years of service. The Handyman (with fish scale) was part of my fishing tackle box for some time but is a desktop knife these days.

Nice pieces guys! Good luck on the challenge.

I'm planning a "different stack SAK every day"  month but I have to check if I have enough that would be accepted for the badge. Does any sak count as long as it has 5 layers or more? 111mm? 130mm? Wenger?

Come on now, Syem...  Just how many SAK's do you have? :) It's crazy that you can do these "a different X every day a month" challenges like it's nobody's business. I could only manage two weeks from my whole collection.

Stack challenge was originally intended to be for 91mm/85mm knives with 5 layers or more, but it seemed easier to limit it to group of models.  I suppose the 130mm knives could be included, but there's a separate badge for 111mm models, so there could be one for 130mm knives if there was enough interest.

Day 3

As my nails were getting pretty long, I decided to use the Swisschamp to do some manicure. (I'm sparing you from the gruesome visual details, just a before and after shot. :) ) While it is definitely not the most comfortable tool for personal grooming, it did its job okay, it will work in a pinch. Although as you may see, I managed to file into the back of my nails twice, that long file is really not for nails. :D

Answer A: too many (according to most people around me, with my lady in the lead)

Answer B: I suspect way less than ColoSwiss

Answer C: I estimate around 650 (no, I don't know exactly... My DB/inventory is far from done). A bit more than 200 Wengers, 260 inventoried Vics and I think a bit less than the same amount uninventoried. I've slowed down on the purchasing lately, favouring quality over quantity... Problem is I'm starting to do both at the same time.

Yes Ron, I saw but I'm talking about different ones every day. I think the ruling out of 111mm models and potentially 130mm ones is to avoid clashing with the size-specific challenges. I'm sure judges would agree on a 5 layer challenge including any size if I carry different knives every day (going through multiple sizes). If they don't I'll still do it even if I can't get the badge... Gotta go through the whole year keeping thing a bit interesting and challenging.
Also, one could carry a 1 layer 111mm knife for a month which (I think) could qualify for both the minimal sak and the 111mm challenge. One has to chose which badge he's applying for so I don't think it's that much of an issue anyways if other challenges kind of overlap in some cases as long as one clearly chooses.

Day 3 - SwissChamp and Opinels

The Opinel pruning shears and #12 saw are daily work tools. They got a lot of use today while my SwissChamp remained in its belt pouch. Only after I got home did I use the SwissChamp´s tweezers to remove a tiny splinter from my left ring finger. This happens quite often  :ahhh, but never did I have a splinter large enough to use the pliers  :D.

Day 4 - SwissChamp and One Hand Trekker

I carried the SwissChamp to work again today, but, like yesterday, I didn´t use it. Back home I used the SwissChamp´s scissors to cut a strip off a bubble plastic envelope. This is to protect the OHT from harm during its journey to Magentus, all the way to the UK. I´ll also be sending him some parts, including a main blade for the mod he´s making me.
