How To Use The New Files
on: May 16, 2018, 03:55:56 AM
After some experimentation, I have finally figured out, the new SOG files DO have a use. :tu:

PowerAccess/Access Deluxe challenge starts June 1st!

It's quite amazing to me that a $10 Chinese built multitool can include a functional file and a big brand like SOG cannot include a functional file in their relatively expensive and ALSO Chinese built multitools.
I understand marketing, R&D, advertising, overhead, etc. But, I am just perplexed at the ineptitude of the manufacturing of these newer SOG files.
This has been a problem since the PowerPlay, and even the PowerPlay file is still very functional comparatively.

I'm guessing this has to do with (weapons) tech info exporting restrictions... The file is certainly the least impressive implement on my recently arrived Power Access Deluxe.
Cheers!

I am considering an attempt at deepening the grooves on the single cut side and metal cutting edge. But, is it worth wearing out an expensive set of needle files?
The cross cut side is marginally acceptable though..IMO of course.

I really don’t know how SOG can be
happy with calling that a file and metal saw
There has to be someone at
SOG that can see the file is a joke
And would of said something about that to QC
Or even QC themselves should of said that’s no good  ???
I just can’t see why SOG wants to destroy their reputation
With inferior tools and problems that should of been noticed
Before they were even sent out to customers and dealers  :salute:

It is insane for sure, W!

SOG should seriously consider overhauling the manufacturing system they use.

I have a couple of SOG multitools and the files are garbage.
That is a pretty big non-specific statement.  :ahhh

Which two SOG tools? And garbage compared to what files?

Some people think the only good files are on some LMs and newer Vics(thinkRebar and Spirit), which are actually too aggressive for trade type file work.
Some people like the less agressive functional files on say a Gerber or LM ST300 for example. These files don't leave little cut marks like the Spirit and Rebar files.
SOG files, before the PowerPlay, were very functional and had a reasonable aggressiveness. The SOG PowerPlay, PowerAccess, PowerAccess Deluxe, and PowerPint are the SOGs with very poor quality files. Their other MTs with files are acceptable to many people, including me, who use a file constantly. An overly agressive file(ex. Rebar and Spirit) is hard to get a clean edge with. In my own experience with using about 120 multitools the last couple of years. :)

ST300 files are also useless, at least on my examples, and I did try to use them several times, always giving up and getting a proper file - they could not even file brass.

I am generally happy with victorinox files, in all models

Obviously SOG is trying to copy the LM Flair - they will have a fork on a model soon,

I've read your experience with the ST300 file being bad many times. Each time I keep  getting out my 300 and making sure it is good. And it is. Maybe post a macro shot of each side of the 300 file to see if the tool needs to be sent back to LM for repair.

On a side note: I prefer the older Vic files to their newer-more aggressively cut ones.

Interestingly, after reading this I took out my ST300 have have a try... DKS was right.. At least on mine too. I thought mine could have worn out. So I used another new one... Didn't do any better. Then I tried the one on the Power pint. It.. actually files better the the ST..... That is to my total astonishment..... and horror......

Just in case you are wondering, I tried filing on the frame of a PST. The Powerpint actually took off material and the ST300 is just bumping over the ridges.....

I made some comparison photographs, as requested, but for computer reasons I can not post them immediately..  maybe later

Moving my finger on the file of the ST300 I get very little resistance - doing the same on the SS? Blast file I feel a lot of resistance.

I will try to post soon

The ST300 is still my favourite tool of that size.

Thank you for helping out, dks! I am going to experiment with the 300 file a bit. I usually don't go by the feel of the file. Some files have mild peaks and sharp valleys, while others are opposite. This kind of translates into aggressiveness.

We need to get to bottom of this, Pabs!
Going to try a few things with the 300 file tonight and at work tomorrow.   :salute:
