Yes, I like shelf queens and I admit it!

There are others like me, I know there are.

Talk freely in here about your shelf queens and posts some pics while you're at it! ;)

Crikey Mechy', you're brave ... none of this "it's a tool ... so use it" bravado. Are you hoping for an outbreak of honesty  :surrender:, sobbing confessionals or an avalanche of rotten tomatoes ??!  :pommel:

Mind you, if you're going to have a Shelf Queen or two, you've got just the right shelving for them *sighs jealously*   :popcorn:

I have both, shelf queens (collectors) and EDC users. As you know...here are some my queens.

The following is my point of view regarding collecting items that can also be used for what they were originally designed. Of course it is just my opinion and can be debated.

Besides our beloved Victorinox (my focus), I also collect the following:

Canadian coins;
Canadian bills;
Canadian Stamps;
Post Cards;
Railroad related time pieces;
All manners of pocket watches;
Military time pieces;
Railroad related books;
Railroad paraphernalia of all sorts.

I would like to separate the above list into two categories:

Irreplaceable items: Railroad related books, pictures, and some old Canadian National, Canadian Pacific and the Dominion Railroad paraphernalia that I own are all antiques and no longer relevant with today’s rail systems. So these items are studied, curated and archived to the best of my abilities.

The second category: would be the remainder of my collectables.

Canadian Coins from 1908, the first year the Canadian Mint came to be, are shelf queens, today’s quarters or dollar coins (affectionately called the Loonie) I use everyday.
Time pieces used on the bridge of a certain WWII Canadian Frigatte are shelf queens, my collection of Hamilton mechanical wrist watches are daily users.
Same with Stamps, a 1929 Blunose 50-Cent stamp is locked up in a fire resistant safe, today’s rolls of self adhesive stamps are also daily users. I am sure that by now you all get my drift.

I have many “like new” older SAK that deserve, in my opinion, to be “archived” for prosperity’s sake, if only to pass them down to future generations. For example, any SAK with a bale attachment has a pedestal in my collection. Now, I have some precious/expensive modified SAKs that are daily users, but only because I wish them to be, they are “outside” of my pre-set parameters, i.e. the bale, or the clip point small blade. Honestly, my 130mm Ranger 55 sees the most use on the farm and gardens...the 58’s, 84’s, 91’s and 93’s...will accompany me to MacDonald’s just so I can cut the plastic straws for my grand-daughters. Not saying here that they are not useful, they are adorable neat little packages of ingenuity, little marvels of Swiss engineering, I love them all and use them often for light duty tasks.

So the above blurb is a general overview on my approach regarding collecting, shelving, or using as part of my EDC.

There is no right or wrong...it is what pleases you...and only “you” matters. We do however; all have something in common...our love of SAKs.

I only have one shelf queen, and it bothers me to no end. It's sentimental, which makes me  keep it, but I don't care for cellidor, so I don't want to carry it. I've got some titanium scales on the way to hopefully rectify this terrible situation! ;)

If I want to use a tool in my collection, I save and buy another one. Usually the second one bought will be used and become a user again. My originals don't see any real use, unless they are already used when I get them. Then I save and buy a second one new or in much better condition for the collection. Then allowing me to use one. I have two of every tool I like  :rofl:

It can be expensive, but whatever, it lets me get to use the tools I like best. :D

Why didn't I think of ColoSwiss when I started this thread? :think:

I do wonder what other gems are hidden in a drawer somewhere Colo :pok:

Have you ever managed to take a pic of the complete collection?
Or is it just too big?

And what about Chako?

I think the only knives in my collection that really qualify as a shelf queens are the red Voyageur and the Wenger Macao:

Other than that I don't really have knives that I would call shelf queens, but there are some knives that intentionally never get used. Let's call them 'dust collectors' instead :D

Like this KLU knife:

And the collection of Classics with government or military related emblems:

I sold a few shelf queens over the years, and only recently Nick purchased the last one, a Wenger Metal 50. What´s left of my SAKs are users, all of them. I still have a sizeable collection of gentleman´s knives and other folders though, most of the gentleman´s knives are shelf queens.

Great idea for a thread.  All of my SAKs live together, the drawer queens and the users/carriers.  I've been accumulating since I bought my first Tinker in 1980. It took until 2015 to get interested in Alox.

And some closeups for the curious:

And finally, mod fodder, future projects, and surplus-to-requirements-SAKs:

Exactly how I feel.  I also like collecting 33 mm hand-winding Hamilton field watches from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's, but I never wear them.
