Wenger Survivor - Any info
on: January 14, 2013, 12:05:50 PM
I've been trying to track down the Wenger Survivor for over a year now. Not a week goes by when I don't make at least one effort to finally bag one.

I'm actually beginning to think it never actually existed..seriously!

I've tried to EDC various SAK's and MT's over the years, especially since joining this forum. But, they just never seem right, either too big, too small, too heavy, not versatile enough etc etc. I've recently taken to just carrying a no-name cheap folding box cutter. The survivor is what I think would be my perfect EDC. However, in all probability it wont be.

But in the mean time, does anyone on this forum actually own one or indeed ever actually seen one - I'm not asking anyone to sell, I just need to know it was actually available in the flesh so to speak.

The tool set looks to be superb from my own point of view - everything but the pliers, which to my liking are pretty pointless on SAK's - for my own intended purpose I hasten to add.
I know the Survivor was discontinued fairly recently, and yet most discontinued Wengers are still available it seems if you look hard enough.......but not the survivor. Was it made to order??

Can anyone give me more information - indeed, do you think it's possible that wenger has a stock list of where they all went - 1 or 2 maybe left in quaint little hardware stores in remote villages somewhere in europe, or better still some may be still in wengers back room.  :ahhh :ahhh

I don't have a direct email address to wengers own customer services in switzerland and I'm almost certain their UK distributor will simply say it's discontinued (No smurf!!) "have you considered the ????".

Anybody ??
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I had been looking for the Survivor for a long time, but it seems it is just not available, as you said.
However, I suggest you to take a look at two very similar models.
I past here an image I already submitted in the Wenger topic:

Three new arrivals for me today (actually two but I added a SAK for comparison).
All from local shops!

........

The last two are very similar by each other and also compared to the US model "Survivor" (which has very minor differences).

On top is model 1 68 02 from the "Bardane" series and on bottom model 1 92 73 from the "Signal" series.

You see that there are not many differences comparing to the Survivor:
plain main balde instead of serrated (locking)
metal file instead of saw
nail file instead of small blade
missing key ring from the 1 68 02 model
Bad news is that both knives are discontinued.
Good news is that I saw one of the above two models for sale locally.
PM me if you want me to check the price and model

Cheers

The Survivor does exist. However the only number I have for it is 16989, which may suggest it was primarily a North American model. Did a couple of searches for it, but the few hits all came up as out-of-stock. However as Basilio indicated there are several similar models that are primarily European. You might have better luck picking up one of those.

This is a nice toolset. But the whistle consumes space (like the Wenger compass does). A scale whistle would be nice for those who need it.

The whistle is at least usable, unlike the Wenger compass, which is not very precise. Victorinox at one time offered a version of the Classic with a whistle built into the handle.

I know that we SAK freaks need implemented tools, but it is easy to add a whistle to the lanyard or carry a cheap separate blade that gives much SAKs don't have: One Hand Opening, Lockable, Clip Point, Half Serrated Blade with Shacle Opener and a loud Whistle at the scales. They call it Opinel No8 Outdoors!

One time i was also looking for this model, but it's difficult to find it.
Also i prefer the whistle to be incorporated in the SAK,, this way you will never lost it.
(except if you lost the knife!)
I believe that the Classic with the whistle that ColoSwiss wrote, it's still available here in Greece.

Schrade at one time offered a Navitool, with dismountable compass, whistle, signal mirror, assorted blades and tools, and a comparment to hold a butane lighter.

If you have not tried already, contact Felinevet.  He has all sorts of crafty ways to acquire certain models (and possibly a direct line to the Swiss powers that be).

If everything fails, it looks like the current in production Matterhorn has the rare items you need, pick up another model with the saw and the scissors and someone could compile them for you.  There are even a few modders in the Uk.

Nice one Karl!  :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
Still I don't get the reason to have on the same knife both the carabiner clip and the key ring.......seems almost like the same oddity of the Matterhorn (new model), with two phillips screwdrivers on the same knife.

They look really bulky. Aside from the collector value, would I be right in thinking these were about as popular as the ridiculously thick compass layer?

You may have a point there Al,

It looks to be a thick 6 layer tool (due to the whistle) probably not as thick or as long or indeed as heavy as the swiss champ

However, I think the tool set is awesome.

Large serrated Blade
Small non-serrated blade
End Philips
Back side Philips
Scissors
Carabiner
Saw
Whistle
Awl
Obligatory bottle/can opener (large flat driver)
Corkscrew

TBH - I think it just smacks of usefulness  - team it with a pair of  Record 4" Vice Grips or possibly at a push the Wenger MiniGrip and you're away.

Which variant are you looking for?
