Chaco,

There is no shame, none, zero, nada in keeping those (all of your pictured SAKs) queens shelved...Beautiful collection with such a wide field of interest. A living example of the marvels that are produced in Ibach, Delemont and “et al”.

PS awesome photography...a great way to catalogue one’s collection.

I think the only knives in my collection that really qualify as a shelf queens are the red Voyageur and the Wenger Macao:

Glenfiddich1983, those two SAK are extremely NICE!!

Thanks :salute:

Around 12 drawers all told. The two drawers with all the above photos are mostly my 2 deeper storage drawers. I also have other things such as multi-tools which occupy most of the rest as well as a knife collection drawer that is only one drawer. Nestled into 2 drawers are also survival gear/kits that I also sort of collect.

I started back in 2009.

For the record, I still think ColoSwiss has the nicer and probably larger collection.  :tu:

I have two shelf queens: an XLT that's too big to carry (though I do occasionally) that I keep around because it's so ridiculously oversized and my very first proper SAK, a Spartan that I've had for 25 years.  Everything else is either fair game or needs to be moved to the 'to sell' pile.

I do enjoy seeing everyone else's collections, though I'm torn between feeling envy at what you have and the feeling that collectors waste both time and money holding on to things they'll never use.  I'm not judging anyone in particular and I do hope that no one takes that personally; that's just the way I feel.

No shelf queens for me - If I don't use it it gets passed on. Each to their own, but I can't look at tools and not use them for what they were designed and built for. Even if I had an original SAK it would get used or passed on.

Nice collections though peeps  :salute:

No worries. I have always been an accumulator of stuff. Prior to multi-tools and I do consider SAKs to fall into that category, I collected stamps, coins, and various other odds and ends in the past. These days, I tend to collect swords, machetes, non folding hunting knives, Rambo style survival knives, First Day Covers (guess I am still in the stamp game), and other things such as canes and walking sticks. Not to mention camera gear. Thankfully I am not a hoarder as I do like to take care of my collections.

I am at the point with my multi-tool collection that I am not actively looking for new additions. If I see one that is within easy reach, I may get...but I have sort of outgrown my now limited storage space..and yes, that is a real first world problem.

That plus the joy of photography means I have plenty of things to take photos whenever I feel as such. I have estimated that I could theoretically rotate a new piece of my collection each day and it would take me approximately 11 years to do such.  :ahhh

General comment, not directed at anyone specific, just to be clear -

It is possible to utilise  something by just looking at it and enjoying it visually, as well as as an investement. Many do not get that, which is why I avoid posting in this type of threads. Some people just have a lot of toys, can not and do not want to use them all and are happy with that.

I do not think many tools will lose value, if not used, so I do not consider having an e.g. LE Victorinox or most GECs  wasting money - You may lose some money if you buy at the wrong time, like when the coloured alox bubble burst a couple of years ago, with Victorinox releasing more colours, making e.g. the copper pioneer less rare, but then you may buy a bottle of whisky, or beer, drink it and then rerally waste your money. I do it because I like it, not as an investement.

Using a tool is the easiest way to make it lose money, unless you are really famous. Yet people try to encourage other to use their LE tools, encouraging them to lose money. If you want to see it used buy it with your own money and use/abuse it.
I doubt anybody selling any of the collections we saw here will lose money or is suffering and starving to maintain that collection. Some people collect used stamps, cars, sea shells, husbands, wives, etc.

Deeks made a good point.
It all depends on what makes you happy.

I "use" my shelf queens to fiddle around with them, take some pics, maybe open a bottle of beer.

Knowing they will retain a certain value is comforting me since I can get my money back if needed.

Agreed, I collect because it gives me great pleasure. I also take photos for the same reason. I also care not if others think differently, or find that I am wasting my money, or that tools are made to be used, etc...

I have a few personal rules I go by:

1. I never sell/trade.
2. I try to not get duplicates unless I plan on having one for a user.
3. I am a generalist by nature...hence why I have a little of everything. This is good as I don't like to stress about getting everything of a particular series or focused collection.
4. I will only buy until I have no more room...as in no more room to expand into, or as funds permit.
5. Collections are made to be seen and not hoarded in secrecy. Thus combining my love of photography with my love of collecting on this forum doubles my enjoyment.
6. Collecting is made to be enjoyable. If I ever started to feel bad about it, I would stop in a heartbeat and go into or do something else.
7. I collect as a hobby and not as an investment.
