I started wearing my Seiko Autometic stainless watch
Again for about a month now It’s a nice simple watch
Bought this new when I was only 17 years old

The Seiko 5 line are the most affordable and best values in mechanical watches globally.

6119-8160 Feb 1969 - going on 50 years old (cal. 6119A)

6119-8490 Dec 1974 - almost 44 years old (cal. 6119C)

Trivia regarding the numbers on the back and at the base of the dial:
You will see two sets of numbers. One set is the movement and case reference in two sets of four characters. The first four are the movement caliber. The second four are the case reference which includes strap or bracelet, crown, crystal and bezel. If there's a code in a small square box next to this, it's part of the case code. If you look at the dial around the edge at the 6 you will see another two sets of four characters. One, the movement caliber, will match the back. The other, which won't match the back, are the dial and hands reference. Those define the watch completely: movement, complete case with strap/bracelet, dial and hands. The other which is six characters long, is the serial number (some very old Seiko may have seven). The serial number contains the month and year in which the watch was made. The first digit is the year. The second digit or letter is the month. 1-9 are Jan-Sep. 0 = October, N = November, and D = December. The remaining digits are sequential for each watch in that year and month. The year for a few watches may be ambiguous as it only defines the year within a decade. For most, knowing the movement caliber is sufficient. It's how I know these were made in Feb 1969 (92) and Dec 1974 (4D) respectively. The other clue for the 1969 watch was the use of "Waterproof" on the back and not "Water Resistant", plus it doesn't have a day quickset, only a date quickset, revealing it's a 6119A movement (combination of year and lack of day quickset). It was at very tail end of the FTC allowing watch companies to mark them with "Waterproof" which disappeared at some point in 1971. Watch companies were allowed to build out existing stocks of watch backs. Current requirements are "Water Resistant" with a static depth or pressure rating (e.g. 50 meters, 5 bar, 5 atm, etc.) although initially the depth rating wasn't required. The 1974 watch is marked with "Water Resistant" (no depth) plus it has the day quickset implemented in the 6119C movement revision. For other movements, particularly the 7S26 and 7S36 families, which now span several decades, one must use other clues to determine the decade in which watch was made. Usually not a problem with a bit of research using the case and dial numbers. If it has a display back, or if one is willing to open a non-display back, the specific revision of the movement caliber (A, B, C, etc.) can also narrow it down.

Finally, the stylized typhoon shaped "S" with a hole in the middle just below the "21 jewels" on both dials indicates the watches were made in Seiko's Suwa factory in Japan. There is also a stylized lighting bolt shaped "S" without a hole in the middle that was used to indicate the Daini factory in Japan. These are also found on the watch backs. AFAIK, they're the only such factory markings Seiko has used.

The Seiko "5" series is among my favorite vintage/classic style watches. The movements are simple(yet well constructed/designed), so they are reliable.
