New file on 2018 Cadets?
on: May 22, 2018, 11:00:37 PM
So, I was perusing the web recently and ran across the special edition Berry Red cadets with the new cut ( not grit ) nail file. Further perusing brought me to a picture of a silver cadet on the swissarmy.com website that also seemed to show the new cut nail file. Does anyone know if all cadets are being switched over to the new nail file? And/or where I could get my hands on a cadet with the new nail file that's not a special edition?

Thanks!

I emailed them and was told all NEW cadets will have the new file. Just a matter of finding one.

I've only seen the new file on the 2018 Cadet, but I would not be surprised if it became the standard.
I don't know how the old variant was manufactured, but I am guessing the new one is easier to make - the cuts are all in one direction and cover the whole width of the metal. The result is, I think, an improved tool that can do a bit more than rub down rough fingernails.
I posted this picture elsewhere on the forum and I am sure you know what the files look like, but pictures are always nice...

And... now I'm wondering if that new file will also be on the new Sportsmans.... I'd love to have a Sportsman with the new file and a bottle opener with a half stop.

Anyone with experience with that new file who can tell us how well it files nails compared to the old one? Is it an all around improvement or are there pros and cons?

It works fine on nails - maybe slightly more aggressive than the old one but not murderously so. You won't accidentally grind your fingertips down the bone.
It's still a nail file, but the extra abrasive area suggests it is a better general purpose file than the old one.

Is it similar to the 91mm file like the one on my CT41?

Not that aggressive - if that one is like the one on my Mountaineer it's cross-hatched, making a very rough diamond-shape surface. Which is also near-impossible to clean!
The new one is hatched in only one direction so it's easy to brush dirt out of the grooves. And the grooves themselves aren't as deep (this is my impression, I don't have them in front of me this minute.)

Looking at them side by side - the lines on the cadet file are significantly finer. Here's an ugly indoors-at-night picture. Actually I'm gonna get rid of the ugly colours... it's all about texture anyway.

The Berry Red? I'm kinda torn. I like the red color, I don't like paying extra for a 2018 stamp. I just ordered a Sportsman with the new nail file ( the seller verified that all of his stock of Sportsman knives are 2018 stock with the new file ). I haven't gotten a reply on whether he has all new cadets or not. I'm kinda hoping to get either a red or a black.

Is there any way to offer suggestions to the engineers at Victorinox? If this new nail file works well and is easy to clean, I'd love to see them incorporate a nailfile into the 91mm combo tool. I guess it would be best on the opposite side of the nail nick... It would be MUCH more useful than the file on the back of the parcel hook and it shouldn't interfere with can opener operations...

Neat idea, but the combotool is quite thin already

What do they call the Sportsman but with a phillips instead of corkscrew?

Can anyone tell if it's the same file type that's on the Executive?

It's not. The executive file is cross-hatched. The new cadet/sportsman nail file is just a series of parallel grooves.

Regarding Executive. As far as I know, several patterns were used for nail-file for this model.
Simple example: https://leaf-vics.com/2017/03/525-executive.html

But in general you're absolutely right :)

I have an Executive that's less than a year old, and it appears to me that it's the same style of file as the 2018 Cadet.

Oh wow! I had no idea! I just got an executive, but mine is cross hatched.

That proves LeaF's point about the nail files.

Oh that's nice!  Slap a Phillips on the back instead of that corkscrew and it would be even nicer IMHO.
