Gerber mp600 help
on: May 24, 2018, 06:54:21 AM
Hi Folks,
I am planning on getting myself a Gerber mp600 BO Basic and I have a couple of questions I hope someone can help answer before I do.

My thoughts are that the Gerber tool kit obviously increases the functionality of the mp600 and would be quite good to have. However, as I already have a load of hex bits, the kit is quite expensive when the adaptor is the only part that I need.

From photos, the phillips driver shank looks to be about 1/4 inch square -(which is what I'd like to confirm). If this is the case, then I can save a few dollars as I should just be able to use a standard 1/4" drive 1/4" hex socket and carry my own hex bits.

Could someone with a MP600 have a quick measure up of the square shank dimensions of the phillips driver and let me know?

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Jon - you're right - a standard 1/4" driver socket will fit neatly on the philips shank. Here's a pic of my '400 - the philips tool is exactly the same.

Good choice of MT and welcome to MTO

Thanks, that is exactly what I wanted. I think that has 'sealed the deal' for me now.
Is the adaptor in your photo a Gerber one or have you had the same idea as myself?
I was almost expecting that Gerber would have made it a non-standard size to prevent people doing that.

Thanks again.

Same idea as you my friend  :D It's a standard bit holder from my tool box. I added a tiny rare earth magnet to the holder and it works beautifully.

I'm a recent convert to the Gerber MT and one of the things that drew me to them is that they are easy to modify - that and the heavy duty build (and the flick opening too!) - I'm not surprised they built them to already existing dimensions so you can use standard bit s with them (take note Vic and LM).

Let us know how you get on - we love pics  :salute:

hope you enojy the 600, it's an excellent tool.

Also know that the Leatherman adaptor for Rebar and ST300 fits the Gerber MPs' Phillips, as does the Ganzo adapter  :tu:

Magnetus - I was thinking of doing something similar with the magnet too.

I may put some photos up - how long do you chaps watch a page like this, as it might be a couple of weeks until I get my hands on it.

 - interesting, I guess Rebar and ST300 users have a way to save money too...

Thanks for your input

Well he might have come with the magnet idea but I doubt it is because he is Magnetus    :D

Magnetus- If it's no hassle, I wouldn't mind a couple more photos of your adaptor.

Still trying to work out I'll do mine. I have the correct socket though it looks slightly shorter than yours so unsure whether I will need to find a longer one. How big was the magnet you used, and how did you fix it in the socket? Also, how long is it from the top of the Phillips to the piece that sticks out? I think I want a socket long enough that the load is borne by that rather that the head alone...

It's hard to plan the piece without the tool itself yet, so probably better to hear from others who have done it already. Don't worry about replying if it an inconvenience.

Your thoughts, and/or anyone else's would be appreciated.

Pics showing the bit holder on the philips shaft, and the magnet is a tiny disc (5mm x 2mm) that fits snugly - it remains there with no glue and provides a solid hold.

God smurfit! I had that attachment for years in my toolbox, I couldn't find a use for it and threw it away few weeks ago!  :bnghd: :bnghd:  :poh:

I've now got an MP600. Had it for a couple of days now and am pretty happy with it. There does seem to be a reasonable amount of play in the pliers when in the locked position, perhaps there is a way to tune this? I also will have to try and get the correct socket as the one I have currently is too large to fit on the Philips driver.

If you are talking about the plier head wiggle when fully open and locked, that is normal.
More of a rattle really.
Nature of the beast..
Does not hinder the usage.

The rattles and wiggles on the Mp tools are all part of their charm! They have low tolerances which means they don't get fouled up with grit, fluff etc and are easily cleaned. They're the AK47 of the multitool world. EAsy to strip down and maintai n and , if you so desire, easy to  modify.  :salute:

and if you rattle them in your hand shaking with rhythm, you can do a Flamenco dancing session with them as if they were castañuelas  :D
