Victorinox doesn't offer single custom SAKs, but what if there are enough orders for a specific off-production model? Has this forum ever tried to commission a special run for its members?

The Facebook Swiss army collectors society has a special "non-standard" production run each year so I guess it's perfectly possible...

And we ordered the MTO Pioneer X in red last year with etched main blade.

At a guess it would depend on what custom it was and whether they need to alter their tooling or presses, the Vic Faq says no customs but of course money talks..just make it a high order amount, very high... and you might have a chance  :tu:

This was discussed before, unsurprisingly.  :)

As mentioned it all depends on how different the knife will be - an etching on the blade, different coloured alox, etching on the scales, are reasonably easy to order even in small numbers.

I think, from when I was investigating this, that they can do 50 or 100, for a reasonable price (think about 20% more than the standard model)

If you want a different tool setup, using standard tools then the cost goes up and so do the numbers that need to be ordered.

Special tools, like swissbianco used to make will cost more.

Remember, despite making machine made knives for years, Victorinox does have people that can make anything you need by hand assembly too, like when you sent a knife to be repaired.

However for anything like that, if they agree, the cost will be high.

Now, there are too main issues, even after you convince victorinox-

1. Agreeing what will be made - 100 people will want 100 different things I would love Stag scales for example.

2. Getting your money back  - people talk big, until they actually have to pay, with their own money; if e.g. Grant listens and believes us and orders 200, 300 special custom victorinox knives, that sell for $200 each and in the end they are not sold he may end up with many knives that he may sell for less, or they may even go up in value and he could be richer.  :D  Paying in advance is the way to go - This forum does not really have the buying power you need for an expensive order.

GEC makes smaller SOF (way too many)  and they are more likely to produce a limited edition in small numbers model with custom scales - e.g. Alox knife with a few tools, like the 15, with MTO shield, but they will cost $150 each and they will not be Victorinox - Again money talks

I was going to respond to this, but DKS said exactly what I was going to say.  Probably because he's been around here so long and has seen the process (and failures!) a time or two!

I had been thinking of perhaps trying to do a custom model for the 12th Anniversary, but the difficulty is in deciding what to do.  It would also have to be on a pre-order basis, just like the MTO Pioneer X.

Is there any thread dedicated to the failed attempts of this forum to carry out such a project? Would love to see how the story went.

Regarding prices, I wouldn't have thought them to be in the 200$ range. After all, wasn't SwissBianco doing basically the same thing? His prices were a bit high but not that high.

And about the toolset design, I think a contest open to forum members to submit their own would be the most democratic (and fun!) way to go.

I cannot comment on +B's business, but custom tools do not appear to have been made available to us, at least not yet.  There is the potential for such things in the future, although I cannot comment on pricing until/unless we get there.  I know Roger has been to Ibach and has spoken directly with the Elseners, and that may have influenced things, while we have been independent all these years and do most of our Victorinox dealings with various people within Victorinox, and not the Big Cheeses themselves.
