I am a mess over here, help.
on: May 30, 2018, 07:53:35 PM
So I just bought some BO Leatherman items and they have a bunch of black stuff that rubs off on my hands and clothing.

I remember a while back reading there was a way to wash the excess black oxide off.

Soap and water?

i took a rag and buffed the Rebar out. took a few minutes but haven't had any issues since and it is still BO. just to add, it was a modified GAW prize that saw carry time beforehand so that might have played a part as well

I'm betting soap and water would be a reasonable starting point.

Maybe you could try carb cleaner?

Or Simple Green. Simple Green seems to clean everything up really well.

WD-40 was originally developed to be a cleaner. I love using it to clean up adhesive residues or oily dirt.

Kerosene works as a nice cleaner, too.

Just a few ideas.

Expected better.

A furnace can do wonders for getting rid of BO problems.

I use Renaissance wax and never have a problem.

Perhaps another wax, like McGuires used for automobiles, may have the same effect.

Hot soapy water give it a bit of a scrub, let dry and then oil immediately... work off the excess oil with a rag or kitchen towel... done.

BO for some reason comes off pretty easily.  I had put my Surge in a leather sheath not made for it as to mold it around the tool and let it fit, and that took half the black oxide coating off one handle.

I think just using it should get it clean soon.

Putting it into a microwave oven for a few weeks might do the trick

Seriously though, wd 40 is a good choice

Cotton swab, rag, and brake disc cleaner will do. I had my Charge all dry that way. Just add some WD40 afterward for lub.

It is my thought that black grit is the dust from the final blade sharpening.

My only BO MTs were my BO Rebar and my Coyote Rebar.  Both were gritty and a good spray down with WD40 and then wipe down while working tools.
