:o  ... yes, appreciated  :D
So it's a 62-64 Pioneer today then?

I also have a 66 Elsener in red. They used spare red scales for quite a few years...

But you're right (except it's a Soldier, not a Pioneer :P)

Day 170

Elsener Soldier 1964 in red.
This one's scales are a bit worst than the one I carried on day "1" (150) but unlike that one the blade and tools are pristine :D (I'll post the first two in the Hats thread too :P)

Great pics, and hat Syem  :tu:  :like:

I keep using Pioneer and Soldier term for the same, sorry. Pioneer was the commercial one without year stamp, with brass liners (up to a point) and with keyring, right?

I did mean the Soldier then.

Ok, so  occasionally there are older ones in red  :tu:

Thanks!
Many Pioneers don't have a keyring...
I could say the main difference resides in the year tang-stamp but some spare soldier blades have been used on Pioneers.
Another difference of note could be the cap lifter... But it actually evolved pretty much the same way on both... Newer Soldiers have the crappy slim cap-lifter. And while most Pioneers easily found have the new cap-lifter too you can find older ones with the same as the soldiers'.
Main difference then is the scales. Pioneers are either OC or have the new "hexagonal" shield... Or advertising. Soldiers always have either the "fat old cross" with the quality check stamp in it or the newer rounded shield.
Some old Pioneers have the full-size awl instead of the in-line awl/reamer too. I've got one coming my way

Just lovely  :dd:

Maybe I should I feel bad submitting cell-phone pictures to such a thread though...
I don't mind if you want to post mine in my stead :D

Thanks Ollie  :salute: I did a bit of research today and found out that the opener layer of the Soldiers was as thick as the blade layer, until some time in the 90s maybe?
What I couldn't find out was how the blade of the Soldiers is different to the Pioneers  Especially to the current Pioneers. I think on my 2017 olive Pioneer the blade has quite a gap to the awl.
And the shape of kinda special on the current Pioneers (asymmetrical).

The asymmetrical (crinked) blade on the Pioneer series is neccesary otherwise the second tool in the layer (small blade/pruner blade/electrician´s blade/awl) won´t fit.
Only the Pioneer Solo comes with a straight, centered blade (but only occasionally!).

And that I think is not "fully" true because there is quite a big gap between the blade and the awl.
The blade could be thicker there, or more symmetrical, I think.
It looks that way on my 2017 Pioneer at least.
So I would like to see a comparison to an older Soldier  :D

A picture will make it clearer.

from top to bottom: uncrinked Solo, Pruner, and Carver.

As you can see the Carver has the gap, but the Pruner doesn´t. Yet the main blade is crinked the same way. Probably saves on production costs.

Looks like the pruner blade is thicker than the awl, thus having a thinner spacer, and a smaller space gap?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Actually, at the tang the pruner blade is thinner than the awl, by a very tiny bit.

Day 173

Victorinox Alox Solo in red OC with bail and symmetrical blade.

Recently restored by the spa... New scales and bail and rejuvenated original blade...

It's sitting on a box that some might recognize. It teamed up with little Sigsetter here to open up some knife mail which deserves sunlight for its pictures.

Upside down box indeed otherwise it would've been way too obvious

I promised myself I wouldn't chase those but just couldn't pass that one... only 100 of each in the world so it's extremely rare to stumble upon them.  :climber:

Day 174

Victorinox Pioneer - golden coloured, with bail, with a vintage awl and with a Fischer tang-stamp. Dunno about the time period yet so I welcome any insights on this piece!

Just got it the other day and couldn't pass carrying it on this extremely important day in the office. I wish I could explain what happened but its basically a really big milestone.

Lovely old Pioneer Syem  :dd:   :like:

- Can opener no +Pat = 1971-
- Bottle opener with write stripper = 1951-1980
- Fisher = 1957-? ... but that side of the Tang was only stamped until 1974

So you're probably looking at 1971-74 of the tools are original, and of there is really no +Pat stamp.

I'm not sure about the awl though.
