Why is no one 3D printing custom scales?
on: June 05, 2018, 06:39:20 PM
Seems like a pretty easy job for a 3D printer. They can do tiny intricate, highly detailed shapes now... and a simple plastic scale with cutouts for tools should be easy peasy. Maybe get some Wenger scales out and about, there are so many knives out there that need scales, and the only place to get them is the Russian Federation with a month lead time... and $22 each. (ouch).

Charles.

I would be very surprised if nobody does just that. At the same time I wouldn't be surprised if their results are in the significantly-less-than-factory quality range.

If I could afford a 3d printer I would try it myself, but i'm not sure it would be good enough to distribute to others.

Cool. They only have two 84mm scales for sale right now, unfortunately. I don't even know what knives are 84mm, I thought it was 85mm wenger, 85mm evolution with the nail cutout on the front scale, and then the current evolution without the nail cutout on the front scale. All 85mm, no?

Charles.

And the 84mm knives are the smaller Vics.
The most famous one in the current line-up is the Sportsman.

The reason I am not doing it is mostly because I can't get my 3D printer to cooperate.

This was 90% of the reason I bought the darn thing.

In fact Remade Knives open sourced the scales file so that anyone who has access to a 3D printer can just load it up and start printing... Just needs some sanding afterwards to smoothen the finish...

I don’t have the link to the files at the moment... In fact an0nemus’s friend used the same file to print a batch for fellow enthusiasts...

3D models for various size scales are freely available at thingiverse.com and you can order someone else's models or have your own done and mailed to you at shapeways.com. If you want to build a 3D printer from a do-it-yourself kit they can be had very economically.
