New Victorinox military paratrooper knife?
on: June 15, 2018, 06:28:46 PM
Is this a new Paratrooper knife from Vic?
Well, yes and no. It was made because the German paratroopers wanted such a knife and and asked Vic if they could produce one.
This is the result. It has not yet been ordered and isn't in production.
The picture is from a small military/law enforcement brochure.

Very interesting. If Im not mistaken, someone already mentioned this knife in the past. Seems, it was introduced in Malaysian Army show?

 :like:
Vic's salesman told me at the Eurosatory exhibition that there wasn't an order yet, but if I would order 500 pieces, I would be the first to have one!

It's a one cool tool, but honestly anyone who jump  out of plane, helicopter will tell you that you don't have time to open  knife in the emergency procedures, you don't want anything to hang from  your suit, because it can accidentally unzip or untie and shred your canopy (my instructors forbidden me  to wear my wrist watch, you can only wear altimeter) and you need light weight tool, just strap cutter(something similar to Leatherman Z-Rex).I am talking from my own experience because i have couple of jumps.
Definitely i would like one in my tool box and it  main use would be on the ground, cheers.

Which I think, is why the military here in the states issues the Benchmade, Ontario, and Gerber strap cutters. Bought a few as surplus, and they are nice. Just avoid the Ontario ones. The replaceable blades that come in them are dull.

Now, onto the knife itself. Really, I'd like to see this widely available. For what I cut, the "belt cutter" goes through it without issue, and having a Phillips is a good addition too, especially if you're carrying this with a corkscrew-equipped 91mm.

But, I don't get why the blade is installed backwards, opening from the fat end.

Very interesting concept. But like it was said before, no time for that in an emergency. Would be much better suited with a hook knife, which most will carry.

I do like that knife though!

I guess it's because that is the way the OH safety blade and spring works !!

ie Check out the Hunter, Dual Po and DAK models

Doing it the 'normal' way could require re-tooling?

On top of what you said (and that I agree): look closely to the OP fotos. It is shown that the SAK is tied to a rope, so it is one movement for opening. But it must be definitely secured somehow to avoid accidental displacement from the corresponding pouch\pocket. That makes 2 movements and again, as you said, adds the risk.
Want to buy:
SwissChamp - 500 Mio
Huntsman - Eidgenossenschaft 700 Year Commemorative
Wenger - FASS 90 Grünig and Elmiger in Green scales

I assume that primary position of SAK is in chest pocket,at that add even more time to deploy it,good observation, I forgot to mention that, cheers.

It would be nice to see Marlin spike on paratrooper SAK instead of Philips head screwdriver.

I thought the knife would be useful for cutting loose the chute, but only after reaching the ground.  :D

A recent snap shot of the parachute knife (as it is called now).
Look at the slabs!
It is not in production, yet. Minimum order is 30 pieces.

Interesting, but what about paratroop gear makes having the phillips necessary?

Oh Leaf, just a slight correction... That’s not the Malaysian Army Paratrooper knife... But rather, The Indonesian Army Special Forces SAT81 Paratroopers :pok:

The primary design of the knife is as shown in the OP’s pic.. Packed together with the chute I think... The emergency is really meant as those that get caught up in a tree during landing due to sudden weather or wind changes blowing troopers far from the designated landing zone...
