What tools are essential to you?

Got the idea from Leatherman's FB page.
Here's my list:
Needle nose pliers
Serrated Blade
Pihilips or Bit driver
Metal File
This thread isn't limited to plier based tools. SAKs are welcome as well

A blade. Pliers. Bit driver but mostly phillips and flat. I now require scissors. I'd prefer metal file over saw day to day.

At work:
ALL LOCKING TOOLS.
Pliers - strong and tight, with excellent cutter portion. BN or NN are good, depending on the circumstances.
Wood saw - well formed for cutting off dowels and excess wood.
File - good cross cut side for wood and single cut side for de-burring metal.
Small slot driver - antiques mostly have slot slot head screws.
Medium slot driver - antiques mostly have slot head screws.
Large slot driver - antiques mostly have slot head screws + opening paint/stain cans and light-medium prying.
#2 phillips driver (or a #1 that can work with #2 as well) - I use phillips drivers often for general mantainance duties.
*an exchangeable bit driver is also a good stand-in for the four necessary drivers.
Awl - starting screw holes in wood before driving in wood screws.
I actually don't like MT knife blades and don't use them often(I carry two knives anyway. 1 SE and 1 PE). The ergonomics of a big MT as a knife handle don't jive well with me. I am not opposed to an MT having blades, because most people need them, but I personally use MT blades very rarely(maybe I left my knife somewhere and I need a blade asap).
Personal carry:
Precise and tight NN pliers with a decent cutter section.
Medium slot screw driver.
Small slot screw driver.
#1 phillips driver.
Scissors - light scissor-centered actions.
File - for fingernails.
Pocketable.
Personal carry is preferred to be outside tools if possible.
Neither work or personal need to have a can opener or cap lifter. I don't use these, except at work I may pull wood staples up with a can opener once in a blue moon (I could do this with a slot driver too).
In reality I am not all that picky, but my response is in the spirit of putting myself in the position of having just a couple of MTs.
Thankfully I have about 140 MTs and enjoy changing things up all the time. I still don't care for blades on MTs, but it doesn't worry me that most MTs have them.

I like these (in no particular order)
- pliers
- knife (both PE and SE are nice but plain edge if can only have one)
- scissors
- file
- awl
- Phillips driver (rather have the dedicated and use the bit adapter but a bit exchanger I am flexible on)
- flat driver
- saw is nice but optional
- toothpick and tweezers
This is about it and this is why I carry more than just a MT all the time

Day to day, bare minimum:
Blade
Scissors
Tweezers
Flat blade screwdriver/prybar/cap lifter comes in handy occasionally, as does a phillips driver and awl. I like to have both large and small blades available - large for food, small for utility. A Victorinox Climber would cover the vast majority of my normal tool needs but an Alox Electrician + LM Style CS or Vic Rambler suits me better.
Not much else, though it's nice to have a pliers-based multi close to hand, and I'll grab a Rebar, Charge or Spirit if I'm 'working' around the house.

In order of importance:
-NN pliers
-Bit driver for philips / flat
-Dedicated med. to large flathead
-Fully serrated blade
I always carry an OHO blade. For me, the near-perfect multitool is the LM Wave, but those are the necessary tools for a MT.
(The bit driver can be exchanged for a regular driver set, but the bits are more space efficient)

In order of usage as far as I remember correctly:
Blade
Drivers
Scissors
Pliers (not necessarily big, but sturdy enough for real use)
Tweezers
File
Awl
Toothpick
Magnifier (!)
Serrated blade
Pen
Saw
I think locks are helpful for some tools to make them function better, but as long as I know what I'm dealing with I'm ok with either safety wise. (Well, so far - probably jinxed it now!)

Most of my day-to-day use comes down to:
Knife
Scissors
Awl/reamer
Tweezers
Nice to have other stuff like pliers and drivers, but I usually have those within reach in the garage or a tool kit in the truck or bike. When fishing, I make sure I have some pliers with me, often in a multi, but sometimes as a stand alone.
The SAK Compact ticks most of those boxes. My one regret is that the Compact doesn't have an awl. That might get me to try doing a mod one day.

No change it what I require day to day. Funny thing is, just as soon as I carry a tool with saw it seems to be used quite often and vice versa as well
. Go figure. Which is why I carried my Swisschamp

In no particular order:
Blade
Serrated blade
Capable pliers
Caplifter/canopener
Basic drivers ( flat(s) , #2 Phillips , ability to be adapted to a bit holder .
Scissors( SAK usually covers this territory)
File, Wood, metal saw
Pocket clip is nice
Awl

Chris

Honestly have to say it depends what I'm doing. For 3 decades the Super Tinker has been a staple for me, but the last 7 years or so I suppliment with plyers based.if I'm hiking or camping I want a wood saw. If I'm at work doing computer networking, serrated blade (for cutting velcro strip off the roll ) and scissors (same reason) and philios screw driver are more important than woodsaw. In either environment, I may have need for plyers. Outside to pick up water from fire, inside to turn nut hardware.
So...those are the MOST important ones I guess
