Watching a few matches.

Peru and Mexico looked good.  Brazil playing now against the Swiss army knights.  :o

I am a fan of Inter Milan. I was hugely upset when Argentina dropped the Inter Milan/ Serie A top scorer Icardi, under Messi's pressure. I was greatly entertained when Iceland shut down Argentina yesterday in a 1-1 draw. Serve you right, Messi... couldn't sore a penalty kick against a film director

I love the VW ad with the Swiss fans, saying "We gave you this!" showing a Vic Swiss Champ.  ;)

Surprised by the Swiss -  I think Serbia after the goal did not take the match that seriously.

Also surprised by the surnames of the Swiss team's members  :)

Switzerland is an immigration country... we have over 20% foreigners here and have a high naturalization rate
Athletes are most commonly recruited from the poor, they have more to gain, so they are more willing to risk their health*. In Switzerland the "poor" are the newly immigrated (before it was the Turks and before them the Italians that made up the Swiss football team). Btw, you cannot only observe that in football. Go to any pizza place that delivers (not restaurants) and you will realize that they are run by people immigrated from the Balkan, they have taken over the business from the Turkish immigrants who have taken it over from the Italian immigrants. In 20 years the Swiss team will be dominated by Immigrants from Nigeria/Senegal or whatever and the Pizza Express will not only serve pizza/kebab but also couscous...

Oh, and Switzerland is ranked #6 in the FIFA world ranking. A big part is due to the high investment into young/future football players. So, all of them learned playing in Switzerland.

* To clarify. Sport is a high risk, high reward career... chances to get a decent to great living is much better in an office job. Problem often is that immigrants have trouble with the language, which of course results in a poorer education, which limits their chances at a career. In addition sports requires a degree of aggressiveness, something that wealth, comfortable living, and working in an office dampens.

I think Rakitić was one of those cases where he needed to decide if he'll play for Croatia or Switzerland

I love good upsets, and frankly want to see the big guys like Argentina and Germany eliminated. Germany would have been as good to pack up and go home, but they somehow managed that last minute goal by Toni Kroos. It was a beautiful goal though, and I do not discredit the German spirit. Sweden is almost certain eliminated. I can't see them win against Mexico and Germany not win against Korea.

I think there is still some concern about England's defense.

Royaume de Belgique may give them a better sense of where they are in this tournament, but well done England.   :tu:

Had a 2h train ride today so I did a bit of research (I only watch football during the World-/Europa- cup, so I don't know the players too well). Here is what I found out

Every single player on the Swiss national team was raised and trained in Switzerland. However, Croatia, Serbia and Albania (didn't check the other Balkan teams) have at least 1 player that was raised and trained in Switzerland. So, it is the other way round. Those teams are nothing but Switzerlands B-Selection 8)

Ok, I have to admit the Croatian B-Selection is playing pretty fantastic :P

the last game between Switzerland and Croatia I remember was a friendly in 2014 that ended 2-2
the scorers were Josip Drmić and Ivica Olić

I dont watch.  Living in SoCal with a very large Mexican population when Mexico wins I'm sure to hear about it.  Their fans go wild with each second of play.  Its pretty awesome how much passion is involved.  Me, not so much passion with regards to any sports.  I enjoy watching however I'm not someone who be giving high fives nor yelling at the top of my lungs or crying at a loss.  Its great to see that passion tho.

Rugby....almost a religion for some here.

I stopped playing when I was 15 when they put me in a team one age group up.....due to my size.

Neither myself or my new "team" wanted that,,,,thankfully.

Somebody my size no playing rugby was not very popular.

Occasionally I catch part of a game, might even get excited, but somewhere in that process I realise I'm looking at 30 grown men running after a ball.........

I do not get it

Soccer makes even less sense

I am seeing a lot of Brazilian flags this year, so I am assuming that Brazil is doing reasonably well.

It's times like this that I really miss living in Toronto- I don't think there is a nationality or ethnicity that isn't reflected there, and so Wold Cup time was always great.  You could tell who's team was doing well by how many flags you saw in the streets and on cars, and what teams were doing even better by who was hanging out of those cars screaming as they drove down the street!

I have to wonder if the energy in Europe is the same as the energy in Toronto, as you can't simply drive two blocks from your neighborhood to rub the other team's nose in it!
