on: June 21, 2018, 05:32:21 PM
What kind of plastic is the victorinox toothpick, and could I glue it?

I don't know and probably yes (depending on the type of glue).

Why the question? You broke one and want to glue it together? Better to get a new one... It's not very stiff, probably glueing it won't work for long (if at awl).

The toothpick is not expensive to replace
And most shops that sell SAKs have replacements
Or the internet is a good place to get toothpicks cheap  :tu:

I cut down and did a bit of whittling/carving of a wooden cocktail stick to make a replacement --- I wasn't very good, but I want to try again because I think I could make a few and then dispose of the used toothpicks after use.

Because I'm using it in my leatherman and want to make a clean 'nailnick' so was going to glue an new endpiece on it.

Just give it a go? Worst case you have to get a new toothpick.

Most plastics will glue just fine, and some Superglues from say Loctite will also do the difficult plastics like Polyethylene. (That is actually a likely candidate for the tooth pick material if I were to guess).

You might want to check that the glue for tooth pick isn't a crazy health danger and that it can withstand moisture?

Edit: Another option might be to use heat and weld something onto it.

Looking at one of those toothpicks it is marked with the letter "7". I assume that is the ISO recycling code for plastic type. 7 is the bin for "other", so I guess none of the usual plastic suspects then.

Front side of the toothpick? Near the head?
I just checked mine. 3, 8, 30, 34. Different numbers!

All hail the hook!

I guess not a recycling code then. Ok, back to polyethylene as my prime suspect and just give it a try :)

Polyethylene has a density below 1g/cm3 so will float.

l just tried one of my toothpicks and it sunk, so l'm going to say that they aren't PE.

This is probably a good thing as PE requires special 2 part glues. l've done it once for work and the glue had a special mixing nozzle.

Another way to determine the type of plastic is to burn it and see what colour the flame is, does it drip etc.

lf anyone has a broken toothpick...
