Thank you all! This place is a phenomenal group of kind people. Your support and kindness with advice, stories, and well-wishes has made this a slightly easier transition. 37 hours until the time. I keep hoping he'll pass peacefully in his sleep beforehand, in his bed of fifteen years, in our home. But, I am prepared to do what is necessary to ease his suffering. He is sleeping soundly right now, and for that, I am thankful. In a bit I will snack him and carry him around. He seems to be O.K. with the pain for the moment. The extra meds have helped a bit. We are just thankful to be with him near the end.

On a funny note; he watched closely when I put away my stuff earlier, because he wanted to make sure I didn't have food.  He hasn't lost his spirit, the same spirit, from when he was a silly puppy in 2003.  :)

It's devastating to have to put down your animal family member after so many years.  I'm very sorry for your loss.

Once it is done, it may be difficult to maintain your composure or think clearly, and you're just going to want to leave. So, ask them at the front desk to total your bill and let you pay for the services before they do what has to be done.  I am speaking from experience. Having to spend the extra 10 minutes in that space after it is done, while they figure the bill and run the credit card, is too much to bear. It will be even worse if there's a line and you have to wait.

He has passed on as of 10:00am U.S. Central time. Mister B went peacefully with all of us with him. I brought him home and placed him in the grave I dug for him yesterday. Buried him with his doggie bed sheets, favorite blanket, and a metal heart ornament my mother wished to bury him with. The little granite headstone will be here next week to display.
I cried for a couple of hours after filling in the grave, but knowing it was the right thing to do, has brought us a little peace.
I know I shouldn't have, but I took one last picture of him before the vet administered the anesthesia(1st pic). He fell asleep and the vet completed the process.
He never lost the sparkle in his eye. His last meal was watermelon slices, as that was always his favorite food.
This morning was the first time this flower(2nd pic) nearby has bloomed.

Thank you again, to everyone's support through this.  I never thought it would be as difficult as it has been, but now I know how much our fur babies mean to us and how we should cherish every moment.

My miniature schnauzer is 16 and if she makes it to December she'll be 17. I too and contemplating putting her down because quality of life isn't what it should be. She's eating and drinking still but sleeps all the time, in pain from arthritis and sometimes incontinence. I feel for you and your buddy because I too get emotional at the thought. I joke with people and tell them how I've had the dog longer than my 2 kids.

Life is tough at times. Having to let a pet go is certainly one of those times, even if it is the right thing to do. Many here have said it better than I can. I wish you all the best!

It will take a lot of time. It doesn’t really go away, nor should it, but over time it will turn into lots of good memories rather than sad feelings.

I actually stopped doing some activates afterwards as they just felt empty and sad without my dog around. In retrospect I should have gotten a new dog when I felt ready a few years later – not to forget or suppress anything, but to have more (if different) nice times.

The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend
Author unknown.

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

What a sweet companion you were blessed to have in Mister B.  Glad to hear he went peacefully and you all were there to send him off to that endless park in the hereafter, never to feel any pain.  Till you all meet again I wish you and your family my deepest condolences.

Thank y'all again! The corner of the yard has been decorated with a slab of granite, surrounded with stones. Until the headstone arrives, this is how it looks.
This morning I felt sad, but relieved that Mister B isn't suffering anymore.

Mankind outlives their pets.

Simply because we need more time to understand life and live it the fullest, while our companions know this from the moment they are born.

They don't live as long as we do, but they make up for it in living it the fullest all the time.
They know how to cherish and love, to bond and to care and to enjoy even the smallest things in life.

Mister B has lived his life, thankfully in a loving family, and has had the chance to add something to the lives of others.

Being sad is no more then normal, but please, GLBM, be glad you had this awesome friend at your side...

And the head stone came in a couple of days ago. It is granite with Mister B's face etched into it. We are very glad the company did such a great job on it. I am leaving it in the living room (where his bed was) for a while.  :)
