Myron's Modding Thread
on: June 29, 2018, 08:54:10 PM
I just jumped headfirst into modding and thought I'd share my first experience.

I bought a pair of 84 mm Alox knives from a seller here at MTO.  I really like the vintage Alox scales, but unfortunately the knives had been re-profiled drastically and had very poor snap.  They were just kinda done, so I resolved to rebuild them using modern implements.  I bought a couple donor VSAKs from eBay, did my research, and bought brass rod from @hiraethus.

Here you can see the donor knife (L) next to the subject knife (R).

First thing I did was drill out the rivets on the subject SAK and remove the pins.  This left me with a pile of parts and a sinking feeling.

Then I took apart the donor knife:

I made an assembly jig out of wood and started building the new SAK up from parts.  I kept a modern Cadet and another vintage Cadet nearby to refer to:

It came together pretty quickly, and it's easy to put the springs in place and tension them when the pins are being held by the assembly jig:

Finally the complete assembly is ready to be removed from the assembly jig.  I used the old blade from the donor knife to carefully lift it off.

First I cut and filed the brass rod flat (sorry, no pic).  Using an old anvil, I carefully marked the pin locations and made divots in one side to act as rivet head formers.  Then I used a nail set on the top side to shape the heads.

I then followed up with a small ball peen hammer to gently shape them a little more until they felt smooth.

Success!  The new VSAK has vintage charm but modern tools and excellent snap.  So stoked with this success!

Thanks everybody for the kind words and compliments; I really appreciate it!

Yes, in fact, I do have another vintage Alox Cadet (which can be seen in the background of one of my pics) that I'll be doing similar surgery on.  Its main blade is knackered and someone did a decent job of turning the nail file into a letter opener.  I have a donor knife for it too, but haven't decided if I should keep the letter opener or replace it with a donor nail file.  Whatever I end up doing, I'll post it here and will try to take some pictures of the steps that are missing from my first effort.

Thanks again, MTO community.  I would never have been brave enough to take apart a VSAK without this great resource.
