It sounds interesting enough to be patented. :like:

There are people who devotes their lives to metallurgy. This might be on the 101 course for all I know. :) Dang fun and interesting though. Making a knife with such an edge would be very interesting indeed.

Copper tungsten is a common material matrix. Maybe I should try sinking some tungsten into copper too - might be more predictable as it doesn't need the temperatures of stainless steel.

I think I didn't pass quickly enough over the tungsten carbide grit to just melt the stainless steel underneath. In retrospect I'm not even sure if that was possible in the first place, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. :D

Either way, what I ended up with was welding and hard facing the stainless steel with tungsten carbide. Which is indeed ridiculously abrasive resistant and silly hard. (For lack of the HRC hardness scale making sense for this - estimated equivalents are in the HRC 70 to 90 range).

Cut some suitable grooves in that with a diamond cutter and one does indeed have a very serious file.

I guess silver brazing will be next. That is known to work, although I'm sure there are quite specific procedures to ensure good results. I don't know those..
