Roxon Storm can opener mod
on: July 04, 2018, 06:37:11 AM
If you saw the review, you might remember the can opener being in the middle of the handle, hindering it from hooking onto the can and punching through it.

Sorry for the paranormal activity pics. Don't know what happened.

Examining the pivoting parts, and the backspring sides that the implements rest, it seemed like the can opener could just take the place of the cord cutter, bringing it more to the left of the handle, to open a can.
The three short implements from top to bottom are the cord cutter, pry thingy, and can opener.

The screw is on the blade side, and the post is on the ruler side. Two allen bits to take it apart, and a thank you to those who put screws on multi-tools.

It's coming out! Honey, I can see the head!  :ahhh

The cord cutter went in first. No issue with it being in the middle of the handle.
The hook disgorger/pry thingy goes in the middle, so their deployment nubs are like before.
The backsprings will get in the way, pushing against the implements as you put them back. I put the tool in a vise, with a gift card on one side, to prevent scratches, and on the other side I put a bolt, to push the backsprings back. Worked like a charm.
I was really worried, but I managed to slowly and carefully push the backsprings back and drop the tools and washers over the post.

Then the can opener, and the blade. Wish I had some bronze washers handy.

Ta-da!

There you have it. The can opener is at the outer side of the handle.
No cans handy, so it remains to be tested. We are not done, can opener.

I was willing to tinker around with it, because I really like it. And it seemed easy to do.
And now I have a functional can opener.

I think Roxon owes you some money for fixing their design configuration problem, RP!

Now that was a quick and good fix! :tu:

It is a bit off that the problem is there in the first place. Makes one wonder if they don't try their own tools?

They are not the same scissors. It is a redesign. The secondary handle's pivot is different, the shape is a little different behind the main pivot, the tips are rounded, the sharpening is precise, the action is better, and the finish is not mirror polish. The performance is too. The outu took three cuts to get through the bottom seam of jeans (three layers of denim), but the Roxon cut through it with one single motion.

Excuse the poor quality pics. I have no idea why my phone can't take clear pics anymore.

Look it up on ebay, just writing Roxon multitool. There are many sellers for it.

Agreed. Did they not test their tool out before releasing it?
In their promotional video on youtube they show it briefly opening a can, but it's a ringpull one.
Maybe they tried with a proper one, saw it could not be done, and went with a ringpull,
or they just had a ringpull can handy, it worked, and they did not think of testing it on a proper can.

It was really lucky that the cord cutter and the can opener could just swap places. Which means that presumably nothing major has to be changed for assembly in the factory. No grinding, no different backsprings, nothing. Just have the two placed in each other's spot, and you'll get a functioning can opener.
