New Style Magnifying Lens Issue
on: July 04, 2018, 12:25:32 PM
Anyone else having trouble with the newest style magnifying lens falling out?

I have had the lens fall out of 3 Swiss Champs with the newest style magnifying lens,

Two of them had never been carried and the other one had never been dropped or abused in any way.

I have never had a lens fall out of the old style with the gray housing.

I've heard about it here, on MTO, but my EDC Explorer and several other ones from my collection have never faced with the problem.
May be you press to much when clean the lens, can't you?

Each time the lens fell out it was when I was opening it....none of them had been cleaned, so they had had no sideways pressure on them at all.

Thanks for replying.

When opening.... could the frame be flexing during opening?

I only have two newer style mag SAKs. One SwissChamp and one Explorer. Both seem flimsy and the Champ lense has fallen out a few times. Since then I have tried to find older SAKs with the much superior grey magnifier frame. Vic really needs to rethink the translucent mag frames. I'd much rather has a smaller magnifier that didn't fall out
In fact, at least with the champ and explorer, I'd like to see the old layer brought back with the longer phillips driver.

Me too G Man!  I haven't had this issue yet, but prefer the quality of the older style with the longer reach and additional torque of the older Philips.

I've probably had 100 or so of the new style mag glasses pass through my shop.  None have ever come out on their own but I do notice it takes very little pressure to remove them.  I hope it's not a glass lens tolerance issue or something asnall the ones I have had have been consistently sized to fit the brass housing I make.

I thought of that, too. Have no idea how to fix it, if that's the case. Any cracks on the frame?

I don't know if using a hot air gun in the frame to soften it a bit and then press it around the lens is a good idea...

Probably not...

I think I prefer the old layer too since it is getting to where I hate to open the magnifier because I am expecting the lens to drop out.

If you're feeling brave, some carefully placed cyanoacrylate adhesive(super glue) should do the trick. But, I am not really happy when I have to fix something that is brand new.
If you have the plastic lens magnifier(2005-2011?), then I wouldn't touch it with super glue. I would try it on the newer glass lenses in the translucent frames though.

GLBM:
The previous lenses were completely made from 1 piece.
If that lens would fall out on itself, I'd eat my shoe ;)

The next time a lens falls out I might try putting 2 dots of Super Glue diametrically opposed to each other so as not to take much chance of getting super glue all over the lens....thanks for the suggestion

Thank you for the correction. I didn't even realize those were one piece. None of my SAKs are from those years.

That should work great. Kind of like vintage watch crystals. :)
I was thinking of doing the whole circumference, but two or three micro-dots would be just as effective.

IMHO the best way to establish once for all if there is really an issue with those new mags is to do nothing in case one falls out.
nothing, short of applying for warranty repair. If no one bothers, Victorinox will never be officialy aware of the potential problem,
and will never try to fix it if needed.

This might be the best option yet. Is there a Victorinox official store/dealership near you?

Darn! Can you find any closer to you and contact them via e-mail, explaining the situation and asking for advice?

I am about 650 miles from the closest one.

I think I will just wait until a lens falls out again and just try some super glue......thanks for replying to this thread.

I would bet my left foot that Victorinox is fully aware of the issue. I've personally sent several emails to them about it. But, I am not paying the shipping to send mine back and wait weeks for another one. Shipping costs a lot more than super-glue.  :P

Kind of funny, that when Vic has a quality issue, they don't get lambasted like most other companies do.
