Wood handle Wednesday

I purposely carried this Barlow today!  Then forgot to capture action pictures in use opening packages during pantry stocking.

Thursday today... but anyway - a Casström Forest No10.

The ugliest knife I own but it has crazy nice ergonomics and the masurbjörk (curly birch?) is OK. Had it a bit over ten years now. The wood needs treatment badly - very dry. Bad conscience...

Why do you find it Ugly, J2000E. I think it's quite good looking. The sheet is also very pretty.

I like the way, that your collection kind of  often matches in style and colour. Classic, and often with a hint of that deep red color, Swedish Red, as we call it. :D So beautiful.

Aesthetics is a difficult thing to analyze - why do I like this but not that? Even if I have the education for it (I am an architect - even if I have not practiced it since 1992-3...) I cannot really explain why this knife does not sit right with me in how it looks. BUT when reaching for it and when using it - it is just a joy. The handle is perfect for me in every way.

My collection and things... I do like leather, wood, metal. Deep colours in a sort of earth/natural spectra and then a contrast to make it pop. This picture is of a 1955 set, rod and reel, that I use. If I had to make a "mood board" in a silly TV-show this is what it would look like:

"Swedish red"... Interesting!

An EYE for quality! To heck what others think.

Your knife is beautiful and to me it would seem it is shaped to be perfect in my HAND (XXL size)

My first closed face spinning reel and rod (fiberglass), both made by Shakespeare Mfg in my home town of Kalamazoo, Michigan, are still my favorite combo for fresh water blue gill, and small and large mouth bass. ($25 in 1965?) when I was 12yrs.

Rapala 6” filet knife 👍

AbuGarcia Bait casting reel similar to yours in the 70s, paired with an Ugly Stick for heavier duty fishing.

Those first impressions just seem to be the correct impressions that you always trust.

Understand, I really do understand.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

It looks like it has some nice character to me, but beauty is very subjective.

"Swedish red"... Interesting!

It's a thing here. :) I think it comes from a color of paint used a lot on charming old, wooden houses In Sweden? I could be wrong? :dunno: I believe that the handles of Mora's classic knives has that color as well?

"...a thing here"? By your nick I presume Denmark?

Funny - I have never thought about the colour Faluröd (Falu red) being called something else and/or being used elsewhere! When I wrote "Swedish red - interesting" I did not even make the connection.

Here is a link to what it is:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falu_red

And of course my own house is Falu red - since 1866.

Wood handle Wednesday

As result of the discussion concerning Swedish RED, I brought out my favorite MORA

And, prepping for pruning season, double checked a CAMILLUS no 1, a gift received from Farmer X.

This pruner is cleaned, oiled and sharpened.

Of course. :) Must be. :tu: Could it be anything else? Matches the knives and leather then. :) :hatsoff:

That reminds me, that I heard a story not that long ago, that Swedes get a discount or a VAT withdrawal or something like that, if you buy that specific color to paint your house. Because it has historic significance. That you could buy quality paint of that color cheaper or something? Might be a rumour? Do you know, or have heard of it before?

Not to my knowledge. But it might have happened. I know that in the 15th centure city authoritys ordered the painting of Falu red when the king was coming for a visit. To make the town look richer than it was... "dressing up the bride" so to speak. Since this is a wood handle thread and not a Falu red-thread I will put a wood handle pic here.   ;)

The other day I wrote about my first knife - a small birch bark handle Iisakki Järvenpää Scout. Showed this picture then:

Had to give it some love - yesterday. The blade was already abuse-sharpened by me as a kid so this time I only tried to make it as good as it could be - without taking away more material than absolutely needed.
