Isn't that one of the things with white steel? They do rust on the surface but it doesn't go deep?

I do believe that's what I was told back in school.

Nice pics anyhow but it does look like it needs some love

Any steel will rust, eventually. Some circumstances may accelerate the process.
What happened to this one?

Wow. I've pocketed my Spirit a number of times and never cleaned it. Not one spot of rust, aside from the ground edges of the chisel/stripper and blades.  :o

My other multi tools require a monthly oil treatment to avoid surface rust.

The only issue I can see with that Spirit is rust in the pivots. That will be hard to deal with. The rest could be polished on a wheel with steel compound.

In salty condition (sea water for example) there will flow a small electric current when two different kind of metals are in contact with each other. The current 'eats' away the less precious metals, turning them into salts and oxidizing products such as Iron Oxides (=rust).

In this particular case, I think it is due to the blackening. Blackening is obtained by chemical processes that leave the metal more prone to rust.
Solution is simple : do a nice parcel, and send it to your local VIC office ; they will replace it !

Black oxide actually adds a layer of rust protection

Damn! That's bad! Any chance you can get to a dealership and send it for repairing? Usually it won't cost you anything.
