Birth Year SAK Restoration
on:
July 13, 2018, 08:39:11 PM
I was lucky enough to recently pick up a Birth Year SAK, it is in the mail and I should have it soon, but it looks like it will need some cleaning up. I've cleaned, lubricated, and sharpened Celidor SAKs before. Is there any trick to polishing the Alox scales? Anyone have videos on YouTube or websites I can check out? Thanks for you help. I will post pics soon.

Congrats on your BYSAK! I take it it’s a silver Alox?
If it were me, I’d leave it just how it is, except for maybe a little sympathetic mechanical servicing (cleaning, careful sharpening, lubrication). I like the patina on these old Alox knives.
Again, congratulations and be sure to come back with pics!

Warm soapy water and a toothbrush/nailbrush
Dry off
Then oil
- Always goes a long way
Then if necessary
Wire wool for the insides -
And a toothbrush and metal polish for the outsides

I borrowed a pic from the seller on EBay. The lighting isn't the best. I'm hoping to polish the tools and scales plus the normal cleaning, oiling, sharpening. It won't be a daily user for me but I will be showing it off.

The scales look good.
If you polished them, they might not look right.
Hooked, like everyone else.
All hail the hook!

I agree with Don Pablo and Aloha. I think it looks great as-is. I'd clean it up, oil it, maybe see if you can restore the knife edge a little bit, and then leave it just as it is.
Good luck,
Myron

Thanks for the help everyone. I got the SAK in the them mail yesterday and it is in way better shape than I thought it would be. I don't think any polishing will be required. I'll give it a good cleaning, oiling, and then sharpening.

Agreed! That thing is a beauty. Congratulations to us both (mine just arrived in the mail today too, and it looks like I have a few years on you...)
