I do not usually post pictures from places I visit but Kiev’s churches will be unusual enough for most people and worth a picture post, with a mini guide.

I was in Kiev for a few days and took the opportunity to look for any interesting knives. I could not find any specific guidance online on where to go for tools/knives so I just walked around and saw what any visitor will be able to see.

In the city centre, down from the central Metro station, underground, there is a big shopping centre,  Metrograd I think http://www.kiev.info/shopping/metrograd.htm , with several mini-shops, out of which at least four sold Wenger and Victorinox products, sometimes together, sometimes separately.

There were also Fenix and Leatherman products available.

On the opposite side, going up from the central metro station there is Globus, which had a selection of SAKs and several Expedition models.

There were also on sale, in these centres and in various small shops near the various Metro stations a variety of Chinese and Russian folders and fixed blades. The Russian ones looked better quality but appeared quite expensive, for unknown to me brands.
There was a large selection of cheap Chinese torches and multitools too in the smaller shops.

There are also several other shopping centres, like Dream Town 1 (Minsca Metro station) that had mainly Chinese Expedition multitools and knives and some Russian fixed blades.
In general prices for Wenger seemed low, by European standards. A Mike horn was around 130 euros and a Mike horn souvenir about 28, though cheaper models were sold at only a bit lower than what I would expect to find them elsewhere.
Selection was good, though there seemed to be a lack of Alox SAKs on sale; maybe they are not popular.

All the people I met were happy  :D to help with directions and even though most will speak very little English we were able to communicate with a mixture of my minimal understanding of Russian, understanding of other similar languages and hand signals. Numbers, yes/no are useful to know.
Having a map with the names of places in Russian to show to people when asking for directions helped.

I used Metro, Taxis and Buses and had no problem with any of them.
Metro is cheap, (about 0.2 euro per time you use it; pay when you enter any station and travel wherever you want to). Usually, Metro carriages will have screens showing you the current and the next stop in Russian and English, though some may not work. Also, the stops are announced. Again being able to read Russian, even without understanding it, will help.
The Metro gets busy between 8 and 9 in the morning for trips to the Centre, so avoid these times if possible. If you miss one do not worry as they seem to come every half a minute during busy times. Shops open at 9 or 10, so there is no need to go to them early. Tourist attractions may close early in the afternoon so check before you go.

Street food is nice and cheap; pasties from half to one euro.
Caviar (Salmon especially) is also (comparatively) cheap and can be obtained from supermarkets and the main food market at the city centre. Avoid the really cheap one as it is not very nice. Expect to pay 5 to 10 Euros for 200g for the tasty stuff.

To help with price convertions, 10 Grivna is about 1 Euro.

I visited St. Michaels monastery, St. Sophias Cathedral (very close to each other) and Lavra Monastery; Lavra is the largest complex with several churches and secret passages to visit. For some parts of Lavra and for St. Sophia you need to pay a small entrance fee. All are easily accessible with metro and bus.

I do not know how much interest there will be in this type of pictures.

So, to keep this thread “light”, if you want to see many more pictures follow this link:

What a great collection for multitools. I am planning to buy a good multitool which can be used for multiple applications. Can you suggest me some good place to buy knives online.
If I need to pick some good EDC tools.
Then I would take my love leatherman multi tool wave and a flash light. Other are just a waste !!!

I think you may have replied in the wrong thread  :)

If not, then check EDCsource here http://www.edcsource.com/ , Amazon, eBay etc
For cheaper items there are also the sites like DX etc.

If you say in which country/region you are, then, it will be easier for people to give sugestions.

I try and keep up but somehow I missed this thread.
I find pictures of places very interesting and really enjoyed this one as I have family living in Kiev.

Considering that this thread got 1 reply, possibly by accident  :) , in 2 years, I think it was missed by everybody

In case you did not see that, there is a link for more photobucket pictures too, in the original post.

Funny, I saw 24 October and thought "last month eh, well I was busy" and didn't notice the 2012 at all.

I checked out the link too, it was awesome.  :tu:  :tu:  :tu:

I wonder if it's as knife easy-going and peaceful now...  :-\
I was supposed to go there last year (maybe take a short trip to Pripyat too), but the war broke out and our company pulled all operations from Ukraine...

I was in Kiev Airport a few months ago and it was very quiet, with not many items on display, but it was working as normal. I think the Kiev area, in general, is OK now.

Very nice. Those countries, although very different from our cosy Mediterranian neighbourhood, have a familiar air around those churches.

Selection was good, though there seemed to be a lack of Alox SAKs on sale; maybe they are not popular.

I guess that holding an alox model with bare hands at -40 degrees will be from painful to impossible.
