SOG Power Access Deluxe file upgrade

Preparations are afoot in D_T's  dungeon, involving a notional repurposing of a file from a Leatherman ST300. While not a diamond file, the ST300 file is light years ahead of the PAD's in quality, and on the whole appears to have sufficient meat to allow the necessary pivot profile to be cut into it, with still enough length to fill the handle slot.

That is some tough material, that is... carbide or diamond-tipped drill bits on a drill press don't manage. Resorting to Dremel with diamond-powder-tipped burrs for the pivot hole. Progress is slow.

Hopefully you will get the file to work
A file is very hard this is why it’s very brittle
But it has to be as the file

Interestingly, as I had noticed with the Wave file transplant into the Rebar VX, the file is amenable to shaping with another file, provided you have patience. This file (from a German make: Pferd) must have been hardened even more than the LM one.

I omitted the external nail nick near the pivot and the nail slot as they would inhibit filing - the nail nick at the tip works well. I can still get the awl out, no problem.

I omitted the external nail nick near the pivot and the nail slot as they would inhibit filing - the nail nick at the tip works well. I can still get the awl out, no problem.

Yup, not only is the length more useful and it fills the available handle space optimally, it is also a real file and has saw teeth for metal work. Unlike the joke SOG call a file... ::)

I just had to take it out again to put the finishing touch on the lock profile. Put it back in and now lock is positive: it remains open when you try to force it closed against the lock. Remembered to loctite the pivot screw too. All set now.
