Vic Manager - scale swap?
on: July 20, 2018, 02:41:24 PM
Hey all - been away for a few months but back into it!

My current signature is looking pretty worn out so I'd like to get a new Manager. I can only really see them available in red, jelly red and jelly blue, but I'd like to ideally swap them out with black scales or yellow scales. My question is - is this easy enough to take, taking the pen into consideration? Would scales from other 58mm models fit?

Also - does anyone have a source on the pen refills for these Signature series? I'd like to get a black ink refill but not sure where to find it!

Thanks!
Rob

I don't think there is black ink available, I've never seen it.

Several of the ones in the photo are scale swaps that I've done.

The key is to be very patient as you pry up from the rivets as to not damage them too much.  I use one of those very thin watch blades.  It has to be thin.
Just be careful as you pry up.  Some folks suggest warm water first to expand, but I didn't do that.
The scales snapped right onto the other SAKs.  Some folks suggest a product called Goop in the rivet holes, but I didn't have to do that either. (I have done it on my 91mm)
SwissBianco shows the process starting at 6:38 in the video

Here's another explanation on scale removal.

I have found that any 58mm scales fit any 58mm knife.
The pen part is the tricky bits as that scale is thicker and has the slider slots.  None of the cool Limited Edition scales have those slots, they're all for Classics.

Also - does anyone have a source on the pen refills for these Signature series?
I don't know where to get the refills at this time..

Some older SAKs have a removable pen and you can find other colors as I did with this one from eBay.
The back scale is just a bit wider to accommodate that thicker in diameter pen.

Hi K9Sapien,

As Lisa points out, the scale swap is totally possible on the Manager.  I did my own recently and it went very smoothly.  I lubricated the pen slide on mine with a tiny goober of silicone grease because it had become impossible to slide.  Now it's smooth as silk.

For a source of the pen refills I'm sure if you send Victorinox an email they could hook you up.

Good luck,

Myron

Thank you.  The SilverTech are the only scales that appear more custom (not red/blue jelly).  They have the pen!  I bought a SilverTech signature or manager and put the scales on a MiniChamp.

The custom designs in your pic - are all those the Vic limited edition designs of previous years?

Also, I took the scales off my Signature last night and didn't realise that the pic was actually a scale tool. Am I right in thinking that I could put the whole pen scale onto a Classic, for example, with minor issues?

A couple of those scales in the photo are Limed Editions.
Yes, you can put the whole pen scale onto a Classic.  I usually put a whole pen scale or an LED scale onto MiniChamps or Vagabonds or Ramblers, etc.

I think I know a special place to get those pen refills, but I do think they only come in blue.
