I love that smilie too!
I think a Spartan would be a good fit.  Has the blades, bottle opener and can opener.

Yep, I was just coming back to say a Bantam as mentioned above.
Has a combo bottle opener/can opener tool.

Sportsman is a nice option as well, has a finger nail file, which is handy.
Also a Tinker is nice if you want a phillips instead of a corkscrew.

So to consider:

Bantam
Waiter
Spartan
Tinker
Sportsman
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

I guess the Bantam, the alox Bantam and the Waiter is what you're looking for. These have "large" blade and the can opener/bottle opener combo tool.

What you really need is a pioneer!

Everything you need, nothing you don't. Rugged, reliable and fairly inexpensive.

Pic is of an older pioneer, but the tool load out is the same

I add all these to my amazon cart, and seem like sport man and spartan look exactly the same, accept small blade.

im picking between spartan ( bigger ) or tinker

They're different size, the Sportsman is 84 mm, the Spartan is the "standard" Swiss Army Knife size, 91 mm. Bigger, "bulkier".

Yes, Sportsman is smaller as mentioned by Exeter above.

I'd go with either the Spartan or the Sportsman.

A Bantam may cost a little less, but it uses the combo tool, and doesn't have the dedicated (and better, in my opinion) Can Opener. And, King, you need an Awl. You may not know you need an Awl, but once you have one, you will find dozens of uses for it. So, get the Spartan, everybody needs one.  :D

Also, if you buy the version with Nylon scales it can be cheaper.

Edit: Camper with nylon scales is the same 19.99 at Amazon (Camper=Spartan+saw)

I don't know, that sounds like a good justification for a pioneer

G-mob, I agree wholeheartedly with your Pioneer recommendation. If I were to have only one SAK, it'd probably be a Pioneer....or Farmer.....or..... Well, I'd definitely recommend a Pioneer.

But.....King specified going with a less expensive option. A new Pioneer is going to run....?.....$US 30-35?  A new Spartan might be found for $US 20-25. So, I think the Spartan is the way I'd go if budget is an issue.  :tu:

Might be that a used Pioneer could be sourced from Ebay for less.  :tu:

King,

The Sportsman is an 84mm knife (closed), the Spartan is a 91mm knife (closed). Both are great. Some people think the 84mm knives are easier to carry in a pocket, and are just as useful as the bigger 91mm models. I love both kinds!  :2tu:

But, where is my head! You could get a used Spartan or Tourist from the MTO store for $4 plus shipping.

Check this site out: MTO Store, Victorinox Spartan

No, that's the Pioneer. That's a 93 mm model, longer, sturdier blade. But between the Sportsman and the Spartan, the latter is the bigger, yes.

If a bigger blade is worth spending a little more you could look at the the 111mm Centurion or Adventurer models.

If it helps to visualize the different sizes, I snapped a Pic of the various vic sizes I had close by.

Left to right:
1) 58mm alox
2) 58mm cellidor
3) 84mm small frame alox
4) 84mm small frame cellidor
5) 84mm large frame cellidor
6) 91mm cellidor
7) 93mm alox
8 ) ~107mm spirit
9) 111mm nylon

+1 So true, used the awl to drill a hole in drywall for toggle bolts, resize a leather belt, used as a scribe, so much potential for one tool.
I highly recommend the Spartan or Tinker. That small secondary blade is a good substitute for scissors. It will do about 75% of what you can do with scissors. I used it to score a coupon clipping and then tear it, cut boxes, and cut loose threads on clothes :tu:

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Cadet. A smaller Pioneer, with a nailfile instead of the awl.

I'd choose the Sportsman or the Cadet (got both and carry them from time to time).

I'll just add, because you specifically wanted an opener, I find the two opener layer far superior to the combo opener, but you can't go wrong with whatever you choose
